The somewhat left-leaning Politico has it absolutely right when it comes to the so-called “Tele-Town Halls” that have been popping up all over as of late, which some members of Congress are using as a very poor substitute for actually meeting with and taking questions from their constituents — you know, those people who they are supposed to be “representing” in Congress.
Perhaps not unsurprisingly, Congressboy Patrick Kennedy (D-Rehab) has indicated that he will be holding a “Tele-Town Hall” soon, that is, after he has his “invitation-only” health care forum with his supporters at the Providence Marriott, Charles and Orms Streets, at 9AM on Saturday.
“The telephone town hall, a forum that members of Congress insist offers them an opportunity to reach out to more constituents than through traditional town halls, is coming under increasing scrutiny from critics who insist that the events are largely rigged and designed to shield skittish lawmakers from facing hostile questioning. While the tele-town hall isn’t exactly a new communications tool, it’s hard not to notice the sudden proliferation of these events at a time when members have struggled to control raucous crowds and deal with the presence of unfriendly, camera-wielding attendees who are eager to post unflattering videos on the Internet.”
