Tele-Town Halls Criticized as ‘Rigged’ (Gee, Ya Think?)

1stThe somewhat left-leaning Politico has it absolutely right when it comes to the so-called “Tele-Town Halls” that have been popping up all over as of late, which some members of Congress are using as a very poor substitute for  actually meeting with and taking questions from their constituents — you know, those people who they are supposed to be “representing” in Congress.

Perhaps not unsurprisingly, Congressboy Patrick Kennedy (D-Rehab) has indicated that he will be holding a “Tele-Town Hall” soon, that is, after he has his “invitation-only” health care forum with his supporters at the Providence Marriott, Charles and Orms Streets, at 9AM on Saturday.

“The telephone town hall, a forum that members of Congress insist offers them an opportunity to reach out to more constituents than through traditional town halls, is coming under increasing scrutiny from critics who insist that the events are largely rigged and designed to shield skittish lawmakers from facing hostile questioning. While the tele-town hall isn’t exactly a new communications tool, it’s hard not to notice the sudden proliferation of these events at a time when members have struggled to control raucous crowds and deal with the presence of unfriendly, camera-wielding attendees who are eager to post unflattering videos on the Internet.”

VP Biden: If GOP Succeeds, It’s ‘The End of the Road for What Barack and I Are Trying to Do.’ Yup.

bidensbrainOver at ABC New’s Political Punch, Vice President Joe Biden had some unusually perceptive things to say in an interview today about the future of the Obama Administration, in the event of a Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in 2010 (40 seats are needed). About 35 of those 40 seats are in traditionally Republican districts.

We are sure that didn’t mean it to come out like a paragraph from a Republican National Committee fundraising letter, but…

Vice President Joe Biden said today that if Democrats were to lose 35 House seats they currently hold in traditionally Republican districts, it would mean doomsday for President Obama’s agenda.

Biden said Republicans are pinning their political strategy on flipping these seats.
“If they take them back, this the end of the road for what Barack and I are trying to do,” the vice president said at a fundraiser for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) today in Greenville, Delaware…

Biden said these House seats are Republicans “one shot” at breaking the Obama administration’s agenda. But if Democrats can hold on to those seats, “the dam is going to break,” he said, and a new era of bipartisanship will begin.
