Erik Wallin Calls for Recusal of Attorney General in Landfill Case

erik-wallinAttorney Erik Wallin, Expected Republican Candidate for Attorney General, Decries Continued Inaction Against Corruption and Calls for Recusal of Attorney General in Landfill Case

October 28, 2009 – Erik Wallin, a Rhode Island attorney, former State Prosecutor and expected Republican Candidate for Attorney General, today decried the continued inaction against those responsible for corruption at the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC), the state’s landfill, for wasting $75 million in taxpayer money, along with an employee allegedly falsifying his timesheet and mileage reimbursement forms. “Clearly, getting to the bottom of what happened at the landfill and what is happening there now, is on the minds of most Rhode Islanders, including the Governor, the General Treasurer and myself. However, my concern is continued inaction by our Attorney General.”

Attorney Wallin noted that the audit that has yielded no prosecutions and the recently discovered no show employee continues to be of serious concern to Rhode Islanders. “Aggressively combating corruption is something an Attorney General must have as a top priority. Unfortunately, when the Governor ordered the audit, and even before that, there was little attention from the Attorney General, and now, as the General Treasurer seeks ways to recoup some of the lost tens of millions of dollars, our Attorney General credits the creativity but seemingly dismisses the idea citing legal challenges and saying that it smacks of politics,” Attorney Wallin stated in reference to Friday’s article in the Providence Journal. “Inaction seems to be a recurring theme,” Attorney Wallin added.

With new details about the Attorney General’s lobbying efforts on behalf of the landfill, Attorney Wallin expressed his outrage. “Without question, at the very least, this required immediate disclosure by the Attorney General. Transparency for an Attorney General is paramount as the state’s top law enforcement officer, and Rhode Island deserved to know from him of his past dealings with the landfill, not from the ProJo. How could a decision by the Attorney General, a past lobbyist for the landfill, not to prosecute anyone, not raise an eyebrow – that’s why transparency is so important.” Attorney Wallin added, “It is time for the appointment of a special prosecutor to follow through on the investigation of the landfill and the recent revelation of the landfill employee with an alleged ‘no-show’ job.”

Attorney Wallin has been consistently seeking answers to decisions made with regard to prosecutions of those involved at the landfill stemming from the audit. “Rhode Islanders are entitled to answers to the Attorney General’s statement that no criminal prosecution will occur – such as, what specific crimes were considered to be prosecuted; why was it the Governor that first shed light on such illegal activity; how will you prevent this in the future,” Attorney Wallin stated. And concerning the recent no-show job, Attorney Wallin noted that he has been calling for an immediate investigation. “If I were the Attorney General, my public corruption task force would have been at the landfill the day the ProJo contacted the office for comment, if not earlier. I certainly would not have waited until the Sunday article was published or waited until public pressure increased for action. I’m glad he is finally outraged by something at the landfill, but based on his past involvement, he should recuse himself from all matters at the landfill.”

Attorney Wallin has traveled the state with the message that being committed to fighting corruption requires leadership from the Attorney General. Attorney Wallin has proposed a Public Corruption Task Force, staffed with seasoned prosecutors, investigators and a forensic auditor to immediately initiate an investigation if corruption is suspected to prevent the statute of limitations from being the shield for those who betray the public trust to hide behind. In addition, Attorney Wallin has proposed an Attorney General 24-hr corruption hotline so that Rhode Islanders can provide information and/or tips.

Note: Technical Problem Still Being Worked On

HAL-9000We are still experiencing sporadic high memory usage spikes, which are causing intermittent problems with our server. This site has for the most part been continuously up and running. However, our ability to add new posts on a daily basis has been occasionally affected. However, your ability to comment on our posts should not be affected.

In and of itself, higher memory usage is not a bad thing, since it means that the site is experiencing higher traffic. However, some of that traffic may not necessarily be friendly … or human. Anyway, if you notice that there are times where the site does not appear to have any new posts being added, it is probably related to that problem. We are actively working on resolving the issue with our hosting company. Thank you.

Update: Our RSS and Atom feeds are temporarily offline. We’ll work to fix that.

Ronald Reagan: ‘A Time For Choosing’ | October 27, 1964

reagantimeforchoosingIt’s hard to believe it’s been 45 years since this great speech. We’re still choosing. Will we choose freedom?

“No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. So governments’ programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth…”

“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We’ll preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we’ll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.”

Tea Parties, Glenn Beck, Fox News, and the US Chamber of Commerce

obi-wan-kenobiWhat do tea parties, Glenn Beck, Fox News, and the US Chamber of Commerce have in common? All are demonized opponents of the Obama administration, and more popular then ever.

“If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”

This seems to be the case, not only for Jedi Knights, but also opponents of the Obama administration (or at least those on their enemies list.)…

OSPRI Research on Binding Arbitration to Be Released

4booksPROVIDENCE, RI – A survey of 16 communities conducted by the Ocean State Policy Research Institute has revealed that proposed legislation on binding arbitration could cause them to lose control over about $543 million in school spending.

William Felkner, the president of the Ocean State Policy Research Institute, will present the results of this survey tomorrow at the Welcome Back Tea Party for the start of a special two-day state legislative session.

The Welcome Back Tea Party starts at 3:30 p.m. at the main entrance to the Statehouse on Smith Street.

Felkner will be speaking about the loss of local control and increased costs that will result if the Legislature passes binding arbitration. He will be discussing research that shows $543,380,851 out of a combined $693,925,762 in school spending in 16 communities could potentially be controlled by an unelected, third-party arbitrator, if employee contracts are not settled during collective bargaining negotiations. Already, $194,959,583 in spending on police and fire contracts in these communities is subject to binding arbitration.

Taxpayers Across RI Organize Against Binding Arbitration…
Marcia Reeback: Can You Hear Us Now?

Reform organizations and concerned citizens will hold a press conference at the State House at 4 PM on Wednesday, October 28th to rebut misleading statements made by leaders of public employee unions at last week’s House Labor Committee hearings on binding arbitration in teachers’ contracts.

Good government groups, taxpayers associations, and concerned citizens from across the state are holding a press conference on Wednesday, October 28th at 4 PM, at the Smith Street Entrance of the State House to voice their opposition to a bill to submit teachers’ contract disputes to binding arbitration currently being considered by the General Assembly.

Representatives from Operation Clean Government, the Rhode Island Statewide Coalition, the Rhode Island Tea Party, and the East Providence Taxpayers Association will speak against the binding arbitration bill. The Ocean State Policy Research Institute will provide data that supports arguments against binding arbitration. The speakers will issue rebuttals of misleading statements made by leaders of Rhode Island public employee unions to our elected representatives at the House Labor Committee hearing on binding arbitration for teachers’ contracts on Wednesday, October 21st.

By the time we are done, Senators and Representatives will not be able to plead ignorance of the will of the people. They will know that we understand that binding arbitration is unconstitutional, undermines democracy, will drive up already unaffordable school contract costs, will force illegal deficit spending, will lead to the financial collapse of many Rhode Island cities and towns, and will impose grave hardships on working families and senior citizens living on fixed incomes all across the state.
