Results of the House District 62 Special Election

These are the unofficial results — sorted by polling station — from Tuesday’s special election in House District 62 (Pawtucket / East Providence) between Republican Tom Clupny, Democrat Mary Duffy-Messier, and Unaffiliated candidate Paul Dinsmore.

Although Tom did not win this time around, he did well considering the dynamics of the particular district. Simply put, it is not “Republican friendly” turf. On the bright side, Tom did win in the East Providence portion of the district! Tom has already indicated he will run again in the Fall of 2010. The campaign begins next week!

Steve Laffey Urged to Run For Governor

Join the 'Draft STEVE LAFFEY for Rhode Island Governor 2010' Facebook group!Steve Laffey currently has the support of 30 Rhode Island city and town GOP chairs (and counting … there are only 39 cities and towns). If he decides to throw his hat into the ring as the Republican candidate for RI Governor, he will have a broad network of support on the ground to enact the real change we need in 2010.

CRANSTON –– With former Republican U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee poised to officially announce his independent candidacy for governor next week, supporters of his onetime political nemesis –– Stephen P. Laffey ––– are stepping up their efforts to convince the former Cranston mayor to enter the race as well…

…In the meantime, the draft-Laffey movement appears to be picking up steam among the heads of the state Republican party’s city and town committees.

Lincoln’s Republican town chairman, Michael Napolitano, reported that the “chairpersons of 30 Republican town and city committees unanimously endorsed [Laffey] as the 2010 Republican candidate for governor of Rhode Island” at an “ad hoc meeting” Saturday.

In a statement issued over the weekend, Napolitano, a communications professor at Dean College in Franklin, Mass., said: “The 2010 governor’s race is the most critical for the state of Rhode Island in a generation. Rhode Island stands on the precipice of a financial catastrophe not seen in America since the 1975 bond default by the City of New York. … I hope that the unanimous support of the local Republican town and city committees will convince him to run for Governor.”

It remains to be seen whether Laffey will bite…

…Asked Sunday night where he stands in light of the effort by Laffey-backers within the GOP to draw him in, the former mayor sent an e-mail that said: “I am honored. It is great to see Rhode Islanders rising to fix this financial crisis.”

But Laffey, who lost his bid for a U.S. Senate seat to Chafee in a 2006 Republican primary fight, has not yet said whether he will reenter the political fray as a candidate for governor, and if he does so, whether he will do so as a Republican.

American Thinker: The Liberal Plot against American Education

Sounds familiar…

With troublemakers enjoying near-diplomatic immunity from punishment, schools have no choice but to hire armies of workers to mitigate their impact…and as in any well-formulated, government-financed, make-work scheme, everyone receives a turn at the trough. There will be more social workers, mental health counselors, anti-violence program supervisors and coordinators, role models, and mentors for at-risk students, right on down to more janitors skilled in graffiti removal, school safety officers, technicians to repair vandalized surveillance equipment, classroom assistants to keep an eye on the mischief-makers, and whatever else it takes to staff these prison-like schools…

These extra bodies necessary for maintain dangerous schools are also a windfall for the Democratic Party and its expand-the-state policies. Bloated school payrolls guarantee more dues-paying members to education unions like the NEA and AFT, both central to Democratic fundraising and voting drives. (These unions also supply many delegates to the party’s presidential nominating convention.) They are also a ready-made voter base for erstwhile “education” mayors and governors “committed to helping the children” who all the while push government farther into fiscal insolvency…

Obama Spending His Christmas Vacation at $9 Million Hawaiian Estate

Not that there’s anything wrong with that… unless your name is George W. Bush.

Here is one of the few MSM reports on President Obama’s so-called “Winter White House,” where he and his family are currently staying for their Christmas Vacation.

They are staying at a $9 million estate which is being rented out at a cost of $4,000 a night (or about $56,000). Obama is renting out that house for two weeks, and is also reportedly renting the two houses next door as well for family and friends. He is rumored to be interested in purchasing it.

R.I.V.C. ‘Meet the Candidates’ Forum | January 8

Update: As of Tuesday, both Democratic candidates have apparently backed out. However, we understand that the forum will still occur, with some format changes and different guests.

The Rhode Island Voter Coalition is pleased to announce our 3rd “Meet The Candidates” Forum scheduled for January 8, 2010. This event will feature the gubernatorial race for Governor in Rhode Island. The event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 801 Greenwich Avenue Warwick, RI. Doors open at 6:30pm and the Forum is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm that evening.

The Rhode Island Voter Coalition is a non-partisan alliance of groups and individuals within the state that channel the activist interests of their members toward improving both the state and federal governments. They are not a fund raising tool nor do they offer any endorsement. While making today’s announcement Mr. Wright said. “We are excited about the positive response we have had so far from both the candidates and the voters, we look forward to a busy 2010.” He went on to say that he believes that the forums provided by RIVC are an important tool to allow the people to be an active part of their government. He finished by saying “As the 2010 campaign season gets underway, we will start to focus on the races for the General Assembly, we are hoping that forum will inspire citizen politicians to step forward regardless of political affiliation or experience, we have a microphone waiting for them.”

The January meeting is intended as a forum wherein interested voters can vet the candidates campaigning for next year’s Governor’s race. Candidates from all sides of the aisle have been invited to speak. Candidates were invited regardless of their party affiliations, Patrick C. Lynch and Frank T. Caprio, both democrats, will be participating in the forum. Republican Rory Smith and Independent Lincoln Chafee were both invited, Chafee declined and Smith has dropped out of the race. Efforts are still underway to make contact with Ken Block and his newly formed Moderate Party.

“We are a non-partisan group of citizens who have determined that our government and our political parties no longer represent us and we want a say in which candidates will be on the ballot in the primaries and in November 2010.” Wright asserted. The object is to get started as early as possible so that voters have as many chances as possible to see and hear the candidates from whom they’ll have to choose.

For details, contact Steven Wright by telephone at 401.615.9704, or E-Mail the Rhode Island Voter Coalition at steve [at] rhodeislandvotercoalition [dot] org.

RI Tea Party: Gearing Up for the Battle Ahead

During this season of Peace and Goodwill, we hope that you find time spent with family and friends to be restorative. We have all, in some way, endured difficult times this year, capped off by the willful defiance of our elected leaders with the Senate approval of the government takeover of healthcare on Christmas Eve. Remember that on this day, 233 years ago, George Washington and his beleaguered army fought the Battle of Trenton after a frozen midnight crossing of the Delaware. They endured unimaginable hardships in their in their quest for Freedom, something which we must bear in mind in the months ahead. With this inspirational video, we put our elected officials on notice that we have not yet begun to fight.

Never Underestimate the Will of the American People!

Senator Whitehouse has not only sold us down the river but has maligned us as racists and fanatics on the floor of the Senate as well. Is this how elected leaders treat their constituents? Only if we let them.

Laffey, R.I. GOP Chairman Meet, Discuss Potential Candidacy

After days of behind-the-scenes intrigue, state GOP chairman Giovanni Cicione and former Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey finally talked face-to-face on about Laffey’s possible run for governor on the Republican ticket.

They met for about an hour Wednesday in the Garden City, Cranston office of Laffey’s longtime friend and supporter James Hackett.

Reached after the meeting, Cicione said, Laffey left him with the impression he would have “a better idea if he is ready to pull the trigger at the beginning of the [new] year.”

As party chairman, Cicione said he does not believe it is his job to handpick candidates, but he said he assured Laffey he would be welcome to run under the Republican party banner, “and we will do whatever we can to help him.”

As to his own thoughts on a Laffey candidacy, Cicione said: “At this point, I’d like to have a declared Republican candidate….I would like Laffey to run, but there are other folks we are talking to as well.”

Cicione said he doesn’t yet know enough to embrace Laffey’s agenda, but he said they agreed, at least conceptually: “The state is too far gone for incremental change to fix what’s wrong. The change has to be broad-based. It has to be strong. It has to be a dramatic departure from the status quo.”…
