Young Special-needs Child Suspended for Drawing Jesus

cross-christmasT’is the Season. Not quite Rhode Island, but certainly close enough to us to hit home…

An 8-year-old special-needs child was suspended from school and forced to undergo psychiatric counseling over a picture he drew of Jesus Christ dead on the cross for a Christmas assignment.

School officials in Taunton, Mass., said the picture “violated the code of violence in the school handbook,” said Toni Saunders, an educational consultant on special-needs children with the Associated Advocacy Center who is working with the boy’s family.

“I couldn’t believe what they were telling me,” the boy’s father, Chester Johnson, who also works for the school system as a substitute custodian, told The Washington Times on Tuesday. “I asked her, ‘Are you fooling around?’”

Mr. Johnson said his son, who is a slow reader and has “a little speech problem,” now wants to transfer schools. Mr. Johnson requested that his son not be named.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Ms. Saunders added, referring to the suspension. “This is a very religious family. They felt violated because of this.”

The fracas began Thanksgiving night, when the boy was taken to see a Christmas display at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro, Mass. The next week, on Dec. 2, the boy’s teacher at Lowell M. Maxham Elementary School asked all the students to draw something that reminded them of Christmas, and the pupil drew a crucifix like the one he had seen at the display.

The boy then was taken to the principal’s office and asked why he drew this image.

We need you to start right now by calling all the Senators on the list then call your two Senators. After you accomplish that we need you to schedule your faxes or send your own.

Take Action by Calling These Senators Today and All Week:

Five Democrat Senators – Evan Bayh (D-IN), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Blanche

citizen to call these Senators TODAY and all week long and tell them to
vote against this bill! And it time to focus on the real issues…the
economy and creating real jobs for Americans!

Calling All South Kingstown Area Tea Partiers!

grassrootsNote: Former Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey has confirmed that he will be participating in this forum as well. Should be interesting.

At 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 15th, the SKGOP is holding an open meeting at Casey’s Grill and Bar in Wakefield. The focus of the meeting is to bring small government groups and center right organizations to speak about their collective efforts.

Most notably, The Tea Party movement is the most encouraging development in political dynamics in many years, if not generations. The newly engaged and aware voters embodied by the Tea Party are changing the way our elected officials think and act. The concepts of freedom and individual liberty must be at the core of the SKGOP. They dominate my actions to be sure.

I encourage Tea Partiers to overwhelm this meeting. Colleen Conley has been invited to say some words. Her efforts and your passion are shaking the process. I am a Tea Partier myself trying to infuse the political process with freedom seekers. Our congressman or congresswoman 15 years from now may be sitting on a Town Council next year. There is nothing closer to “grass roots” than town level activism and the SKGOP is committed to shaking the status quo in South Kingstown and beyond.

I hope to see you there. Do not hesitate to call or write me with any comments, questions or even inflamed criticism!!

Chairman, South Kingstown Republican Town Committee
