RIGOP Notes that AG Patrick Lynch’s Approval Ratings Are In The Dump

landfillThe Rhode Island Republican Party took note of a poll released yesterday by Brown University, with Party Chair Giovanni Cicione commenting that “it should send a clear signal to Attorney General Patrick Lynch that the voters of Rhode Island are starting to see the truth about him and his cronies and that they don’t like what they see.”

In May 2009, Attorney General Lynch had a job approval rating of 47% (the combined excellent and good percentage) and a negative rating of 39% (the combined fair and poor percentages) or a net positive rating of 8%. Now, a little over six months later, Mr. Lynch has a job approval rating of 38% and a negative rating of 47% or a net negative rating of 9%. This flip is a huge swing of 17% over a seven month period. Nearly one in five voters has changed their minds about Lynch.

Although some of Rhode Island federal elected officials saw their approval ratings decline, none matched Mr. Lynch. It is telling that none of the other elected officials to statewide office saw such a dramatic change over the same period. For example, Lt. Governor Roberts went from 22% approval rating and 36% disapproval rating in May to 22% approval rating and 37% disapproval rating in December. Governor Carcieri went from a 36% approval rating and 59% disapproval rating in May to 37% approval rating and 56% disapproval rating in December. General Treasurer Caprio only saw a slight decline. He went from a 41% approval rating and 24% disapproval rating in May to a 39% approval and 26% disapproval rating in December.

“Clearly Mr. Lynch’s approval rating is in the dump”, said Cicione, “because of the revelations and negative publicity regarding Lynch’s out of state travels, the related complaints filed by the RIGOP against Mr. Lynch at the Board of Elections and Ethics Commission relating to those trips, and the total inaction by the Mr. Lynch in stopping corruption at Rhode Island’s dump, the Johnston Landfill.” “If Mr. Lynch seriously expects the voters to consider him as a credible candidate for Governor, he will need to take a break from the junkets and fundraising tours and instead stay in Rhode Island to start addressing the waste and corruption perpetrated by political insiders.”

He’s Ba-ack! Former Mayor Steve Laffey Weighs in on the Budget

stevelaffeyDuring an exclusive interview yesterday with The Herald, former Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey, reportedly planning a run for Governor next year, said that the state’s budgetary problems, and the fact that they’ve become local budget problems, should surprise nobody who has been paying attention.

Governor Donald Carcieri announced on Monday that he was proposing a $125 million cut in aid to cities and towns. The cut would cost Cranston $6.6 million in state aid.

Laffey has been sounding the fiscal alarm in op-ed pieces and talk radio appearances for the last several years. He will not yet acknowledge whether or not he is running for Governor…

Laffey said that every legislator who voted for the budget, and Governor Donald Carcieri, a fellow Republican who signed it, should not be in office.

“Everyone involved should resign. Either they didn’t know it would come to this, or they did and I’m not sure which is worse,” said Laffey.

Sounding every bit like a candidate for Governor, Laffey said the state’s political landscape is in need of a serious makeover. At a press conference to announce the appointment of a new economic development director late last week, talk centered on the need for everyone to “work together” to find solutions. Laffey, however, who didn’t attend the event, suggested that the approach was misguided. Instead, he said the state needs reformers who are ready for a battle.

“The bottom line is we’re going to need somebody, or a group of people, to run for public office who will take the fight to the established political order, and by that I mean the public sector union leaders and the General Assembly,” said Laffey. “There needs to be a direct fight … and unless we do that, we’ll continue on the road to collapse.”…

American Spectator: Labor Unions and the News Media

mediocrityThe issue that has sparked a lot of interest lately, however, has involved schoolteachers, not industrial unions. Their two main unions are the National Education Association (with 3.2 million members, dedicated to themselves first, the Democratic Party second, and the children third) and the American Federation of Teachers (1.4 million members; same priorities).

These unions have played a major role in the decline of public education with go-slow work rules and by making it almost impossible to fire teachers, no matter how incompetent.

Today, however, in both Washington and New York, the collapse of inner-city schools has reached a point where the newspapers can no longer avoid addressing the role of unions…

House Republicans Oppose Importation of Terrorists to America

Earlier this year, the House Republicans created a video, “Never Again,” to speak against President Obama’s decision to close Guantanamo Bay prison. Since the announcement was made that some Guantanamo Bay prisoners will be moved to Illinois, they felt the video worth highlighting again. GOP.gov has an entire section on this topic, including information on the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act. Check out the our special section for articles and relevant news.
