According to several very reliable political sources, I have learned that State Rep. John Loughlin will soon “officially” confirm what is possibly one of the worst kept secrets in all of  Rhode Island Republican politics:

John Loughlin is running for United States Congress against Rep. Patrick Kennedy!

This I know: The formal announcement will be next Thursday, February 4th at 12:00 PM in Lincoln. I should be able to provide additional detailed information shortly.

Video: Steve Laffey Headlines RI Tea Party Meeting

Well over 300 people turned out tonight at the Quonset “O” Club in North Kingstown for what turned out to be a phenomenal motivational speech and presentation by former Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey on what needs to be done to fix Rhode Island.

This report and video is from ABC6:

As the race for RI Governor heats up, one person who said they weren’t interested was former Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey. However, Laffey recently unveiled a plan to fix Rhode Island, focusing on financial stability.

That, combined with the fact that Laffey is headlining an event for the RI Tea Party on Wednesday, got the rumor mill churning once again. Will he or won’t he be running for Governor?

President Obama Disrespects Supreme Court at SOTU

During his State of the Union Address tonight, President Obama committed a significant breach of protocol by openly criticizing the members of the United States Supreme Court in his presence for their recent decision agreeing that free speech rights apply to American corporations (as well as unions, for our liberal friends).

After Obama insulted the court members, Associate Justice Samuel Alito can be seen shaking his head and mouthing what appeared to be the words “not true,” as the Democrats around the Supreme Court members stood and applauded around them.

Text of Gov. Carcieri’s ‘State of the State’ Address

This is the prepared text of Governor Carcieri’s final State of the State address, to be delivered at 7:00 PM this evening:

The Honorable Donald L. Carcieri
Governor, State of Rhode Island
State of the State Address – January 26, 2010

Mr. Speaker, Madam President, members of the General Assembly, my fellow General Officers, members of the Judiciary, distinguished guests, and my fellow Rhode Islanders. Before I begin tonight, if you’d indulge me, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the source of my inspiration, my strength, my motivation, and my comfort – and that’s my wife, First Lady Sue Carcieri, our four children and their spouses, and our fourteen grandchildren. Many of them are here tonight. Thank you for all your love and support.

Let us begin tonight by being mindful of the catastrophic earthquake that has ravaged Haiti. We are all in shock and disbelief, and our hearts break as we see the nightly images of the horrific devastation and loss of life. Those of us who have visited Haiti are keenly aware of the extreme poverty and hardship that so many Haitians endure on a daily basis. I know that Rhode Island is home to several thousand Haitians and that many other Rhode Islanders, both young and old, travel there to be of service to the people of Haiti. In fact, just a few days ago, members of the 143rd R.I. Air National Guard flew two of our transport planes to be deployed to assist Haiti. Tonight, we express our prayers and condolences to all those people who have been so profoundly affected. Please join me for a moment of silence in honor of those who have lost their lives so tragically in Haiti.

Thank you.

Ladies and gentlemen. As I stand before you tonight, our state is facing the most severe economic turmoil of the last 30 years, perhaps longer. This challenge cannot be overstated. We have over 73,000 Rhode Islanders out of work, with little sign that employment will improve significantly anytime soon. We all have neighbors who’ve seen their work hours reduced and their income diminished. They’re scrambling to pay their bills, while they watch their home values decline dramatically. They are substantially reducing their spending just to make ends meet.

Every business, both large and small, is reducing costs as they adjust to lower demand for their products and services.

They’re fighting for survival and trying desperately to keep as many of their workers employed as possible. Lay-offs are a last resort for a business because qualified, trained, and high-performing employees are what make a business successful.

In this climate, at this time, they expect their government at every level, federal, state and local — a government they pay for with their hard earned tax dollars—to reduce and control spending as well. As elected leaders, it is our job to deliver on that expectation—and I intend to do so! Continue reading ‘Text of Gov. Carcieri’s ‘State of the State’ Address’

RI Tea Party Open Meeting w/ Steve Laffey | January 27

A message from the Rhode Island Tea Party:

Just back from a national non-partisan conference for fiscally conservative grassroots organizers, RI Tea Party members are ready to roll out the most effective strategies to reclaim our state and our country by aiming to elect officials who will defend and protect our constitutionally granted individual rights. If you are like 80% of Americans, who are for smaller government that serves the people, instead of big government which the people must serve, then you are one of us!

How are we going to get this done in a state dominated by a progressive union- backed state legislature and federal delegation that refuses to listen to the will of the people? Come hear about our strategy at the next RI Tea Party Meeting, this Wednesday, January 27th, at which we will roll out “The Rhode Island Model” to take back our state and our country! Agenda as follows:

6:00PM: Doors open for Reception (Cash Bar and light snacks)
6:45PM: Meeting Commences: Unveiling “The Rhode Island Model” : Colleen Conley
7:00PM: Keynote Speaker: Steve Laffey (former Mayor of Cranston)
7:20PM: Transparency and Accountability: Bill Felkner (OSPRI)
7:35PM: Candidate Recruitment and Volunteer Training:
Mark Zaccaria (Candidate for 2nd Congressional District) and
Sandra Thompson (Operation Clean Government)
7:50PM: Break-out Sessions
8:30PM: Recap and Adjourn

This is a CAN’T MISS MEETING FOR ANYONE WHO CARES ABOUT THE DIRECTION OF OUR STATE AND OUR COUNTRY!

Remember, without YOU, the Tea Party would not exist. We have made great strides in the past year thanks to YOUR efforts! Without your continued active participation and dedication to taking our state and our country back, nothing will change. Together, we will make History!

*Please note that the RI Tea Party does not endorse candidates, but simply provides information to our members so that you can get involved in active citizen governance.

Chafee Goes for the Triple Crown of Tax Hikes

“THE OPPOSITE OF RIGHT PART VI”
CHAFEE GOES FOR THE TRIPLE CROWN OF TAX HIKES

We live in historic times indeed. Mr. Chafee, the former horse farrier, knows how difficult it is to win the triple crown of horse racing. It hasn’t been done in three decades. Based on the latest position taken by Mr. Chafee on eliminating the flat tax option, it is clear that Mr. Chafee is determined to accomplish the triple crown of tax hikes: property, sales, and income taxes.

The Rhode Island Republican Party noted today that when he was mayor in Warwick, Mr. Chafee was able to achieve the first leg of the triple crown by raising property taxes nearly every year as mayor (ProJo 5/11/94, 5/24/94, 6/14/94, 5/25/95, 6/14/95, 5/31/96, 6/18/96). In fact, he was so determined to raise property taxes he was willing to go to court to raise taxes (ProJo 6/18/96, and Sullivan v. Chafee 703 A.2d 748 (R.I.1997). “Chafee has proven that he is willing to leave the taxpayers in the dust,” said Republican Party Chair Giovanni Cicione.

At his announcement for governor – right out of the gate, as it were – he made it clear that he wanted to raise sales tax on groceries, clothes, and medicine (ProJo 1/5/10). “With this regressive proposal Chaffee now has a plan to leave the poor and middle class working families in the dust as well,” Cicione continued.

Now, less than a month into the race Mr. Chafee says he “will have to consider … repealing the flat tax” (ProJo 1/19/10), which would have the effect of raising income taxes. “Chafee is apparently even willing to throw jobs and small business into the mud to secure his victory,” Cicione added.

“If Mr. Chafee succeeds in raising both sales and income taxes after he has already raised property taxes as mayor, his apparent aspiration to make history by winning the triple crown of tax hikes will be accomplished.” “Of course, he’s betting our money and our future, but this is of no consequence to Mr. Chafee,” said Cicione

Mr. Chafee will have made history in the vain hope that we can then “leave benefits alone” for public sector union employees (ProJo 1/13/10). “As the horse race for Governor begins,” concluded Cicione, “taxpayers should place no bets on Mr. Chafee.” “The only winner in this race would be Mr. Chafee and of course, the horse he would ride to victory- the public employee unions.”

Bipartisan Fundraiser for Haitian Relief | Thursday

Rhode Island Democratic Party Chairman Bill Lynch and Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Giovanni D. Cicione have announced that both parties would come together to host a joint community fundraiser on Thursday in Providence to benefit the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

“Both Chairman Cicione and I felt it was important to put aside political differences and come together to offer our parties’ combined assistance to the good people of Haiti. We’re asking all Democrats, Republicans and independents to join us next Thursday, give whatever they can, and make sure the Haitian people know that Rhode Islanders are standing with them during this critical time of need,” Lynch said.

“As Rhode Islanders, we share a common obligation to assist our friends and neighbors. Haiti is facing a crisis of unimaginable proportion and so I’m hopeful that we can step up as a community and send critical support to a nation that desperately needs our help. The thoughts and prayers of all Rhode Islanders remain with the victims in Haiti and their family members here in the U.S. and around the world,” Cicione said.

The community fundraiser will be held next Thursday, January 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at the Roger Williams Park Casino, in Providence. The chairmen said the suggested contribution will be $25, or whatever one feels they can afford. All proceeds will benefit Doctors Without Borders, a relief organization that is rushing to provide assistance to victims in a country that is dramatically under served by medical professionals.

The event will be co-sponsored by The Rhode Island Young Democrats and The Rhode Island Young Republicans. Additionally, the members of Rhode Island’s Congressional delegation, the general officers, and leaders in the General Assembly have been invited and are expected to be in attendance.
