Dinesh D’Souza to Speak at Brown University | Monday

The BROWN COLLEGE REPUBLICANS are pleased to invite all ladies, gentlemen, students, faculty, and anyone else with the slightest interest to a lecture by Mr. Dinesh D’Souza entitled “Is God the Problem?”.

A strong Conservative debater (a more comprehensive biography is pasted below this description; I implore all of you to examine it), Mr. D’Souza strives to elucidate the misconceptions about the effects of religion and religious behavior on our society as a whole. As Dinesh said to me himself, the topic of his speech, “Is God the Problem?”, will address the following:

“Many people, notably atheists, allege that belief in God is not merely unscientific and irrational; it is also dangerous. They argue that religion is the cause of many of the evils in the world, from the Crusades and the Inquisition to 9/11 and the current unrest in the Middle East. In this talk I will challenge this critique of God and religion and show that God, far from being the problem, is actually the main part of the solution. This is not just a case for the utility of religion, however; it is also an argument for the truth of religious belief.”

Does this sound interesting to you? If so, please join the College Republicans in MACMILLAN HALL 117, at 8PM on MONDAY APRIL 26th! View the additional material (provided below) if you want to get a feel for what the speech will be like.

NFRA President Calls On RNC to Fire Steele

DESTIN, FLORIDA — Today, National Federation of Republican Assemblies President Rod D. Martin called on the Republican National Committee to immediately fire Republican National Chairman Michael Steele for comments he made Tuesday night to a student group in which he stated that African Americans “don’t have a reason” to vote for Republicans.

The story concerning Steele’s remarks appeared in The Politico, and is available online at http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0410/36171.html

“I can think of a hundred reasons why African Americans should vote Republican, so why can’t our African American national chairman?” Martin asked. “Most African Americans are pro-life: so are we. Most African Americans believe in traditional values: so do we. Most African Americans are in favor of school choice for their children: so are we.

“In fact,” Martin continued, “there’s hardly any issue on which Democrats serve the interests of African Americans. We stand for cutting their taxes, improving their health care, expanding opportunities for their small businesses and robustly defending their — our — nation from foreign threats. The left’s appeal has always been ‘you are a minority, you are a victim, we will defend you from white America.’ It’s racist, it deliberately reopens half-century-old wounds which were inflicted by Democrats in the first place, and it has to stop.”

The National Federation of Republican Assemblies, styled “the Republican Wing of the Republican Party”, is a 75-year old grassroots organization which seeks to elect real conservatives to lead the Republican Party. Said Martin, “Steele is no conservative, and if he believes what he said, not only does he have to go, but he was dishonest in taking the position he holds, and any RNC member who acts to continue his chairmanship must be challenged for re-election as well.

“We must repudiate the politics of victimization, race and bribes to groups. Michael Steele sees blacks and whites. We see and seek to serve Americans: all Americans. That is the chief difference between the two parties, and if Michael Steele can’t see and articulate a vision that simple and that inclusive, he is unfit to lead our party or anything else. He needs to go, now.”

Frank Caprio Makes About Face on Pension Reform

CAPRIO MAKES ABOUT FACE ON PENSION REFORM WITH HYBRID PENSION PLAN PROPOSAL

It has been reported that Frank Caprio, candidate for Rhode Island Governor, has proposed a new form of hybrid pension plan for active state employees. While promoting this plan might appear to be a legitimate state function for the General Treasurer, the timing of Caprio’s proposal, coming just days after the Providence Journal published an op-ed piece by RIGOP Chairman Giovanni D. Cicione exposing Caprio’s past opposition to pension reform and in light of Caprio’s history on this issue, demonstrates that the proposal is nothing more than political posturing and the misuse of his staff’s time to promote his gubernatorial campaign.

“For three and one-half years, General Treasurer Frank Caprio embraced the status quo in Rhode Island’s public employee pension plan,” noted Chairman Cicione. “This transparent attempt to score points as a fiscally responsible candidate for governor is an election year ploy and the General Treasurer is using taxpayer supported staff and resources for political activity. Caprio and the employees of the General Treasurer’s office should be apologizing to Rhode Island taxpayers for the billions of dollars in unfunded pension liability that Caprio has been content to oversee instead of working on his campaign for Governor.”

In announcing this plan, Caprio was quoted as saying, “he first recommended a hybrid system in 2008.” This statement, however, is completely refuted by the facts. For example, the Providence Journal reported in January of 2008 that “Caprio has not yet taken a position on what, if anything, the state should do to lower its annual pension costs or $4.9 billion in unfunded liability for the promises the state made in earlier years to current and future retirees. Instead, he has been ordering up studies.” (ProJo 1/25/08). Speaker of the RI House, William Murphy, appointed Caprio to a pension review panel later that year and he continued to “study” the pension issue throughout 2008 as the panel missed deadline after deadline to issue its report. (ProJo 9/22/08).

As late as March of 2009, the Treasurer’s designee to the pension review panel opposed a proposal to limit annual COLA increases to the first $30,000 of pension benefits, which is similar to the proposal now supported by the Democratic leadership of the General Assembly (Pension Commission Final report, pp. 229-230). As recently discussed in Cicione’s op-ed, Caprio has a long history of collaboration in the under funding of the State pension system and the use of unrealistic projections to hide the true scope of vast unfunded liabilities.

“Now that the political winds have shifted, Caprio wants to portray himself as a fiscal conservative,” continued Cicione, “but taxpayers will remember Frank Caprio’s history as a member of Rhode Island’s Democratic leadership that is responsible for this pension mess and that can no longer be trusted to oversee a defined benefit pension system. Thanks to the irresponsible actions of the General Assembly, including those of Former State Representative and State Senator Frank Caprio, the burden on taxpayers to support the state pension system is far beyond anything that Caprio’s hybrid pension plan could address adequately. Instead, we need to move as many public employees over to a 401k style plan as soon as possible and get this pension mess behind us as quickly as possible,” concluded Chairman Cicione.

Why the Left Needs Racism

The political left claims to love racial diversity, but it bitterly opposes such diversity on the political right. This is an obvious matter of political self-interest: Since 1964, blacks have voted overwhelmingly Democratic. If Republicans were able to attract black votes, the result would be catastrophic for the Democratic Party. Even in 2008, the Democrats’ best presidential year since ’64, if the black vote had been evenly split between the parties (and holding the nonblack vote constant), Barack Obama would have gotten about 48% of the vote and John McCain would be president.

To keep blacks voting Democratic, it is necessary for the party and its supporters to keep alive the idea that racism is prevalent in America and to portray the Republican Party (as well as independent challengers to the Democrats, such as the tea-party movement) as racist. The election of Barack Obama made nonsense of the idea that America remains a racist country and thereby necessitated an intensifying of attacks on the opposition as racist…

RI College Republicans Endorse Robitaille for Governor

Today the Rhode Island College Republicans endorse John Robitaille as our next Governor of Rhode Island. With the looming state budget deficit, future pension liability and expanding social welfare obligations, the state of Rhode Island is facing a bleak future. In this critical time we need a Governor who understands the politics of Smith Hill, but who is not a professional lifetime politician. Likewise, the state of Rhode Island desperately needs a bold common-sense conservative who is willing to cut taxes, streamline regulations and help the private sector create jobs.

As college students, we can see first hand the profound lack of attractive careers in the state since most major corporations have fled to more business friendly climates. In order to encourage students to come to Rhode Island’s great colleges and universities and then remain in the state, we must radically change the big government tax and spend culture in our state. John Robitaille has the courage, skills and experience needed to make it happen and therefore we endorse.

Check out his website and contact us to find out how to become involved in the campaign

Gov. Carcieri Endorses John Robitaille for Governor

Carcieri: “He will make a great governor and he will defend conservative principles of smaller government, lower taxes, individual freedoms and self-reliance”

Governor Donald L. Carcieri endorsed Republican candidate John Robitaille for Governor today in a letter he sent to thousands of his supporters throughout the state. In the letter the Governor said that Rhode Islanders must now think ahead to the future.

“Now we must think ahead to the November elections and ensure that the new governor is someone who has the integrity, skills and leadership experience to not only continue the progress we have made, but also who will have the courage to persevere during continued economic turmoil. John Robitaille is that man.”

“I have known John to be an honest, disciplined, thoughtful and energetic leader. He will make a great governor and he will defend conservative principles of smaller government, lower taxes, individual freedoms and self-reliance,” said the Governor.

Governor Carcieri described Robitaille as an experienced and capable leader. “John is a native Rhode Islander, a Providence College graduate, a military veteran, a seasoned labor negotiator and a former small business owner. He has served on my senior staff and he has been actively engaged in the community showing leadership in many non-profit organizations including Bradley Hospital and the Samaritans of Rhode Island.”

John Robitaille commented on the endorsement, “I am honored and humbled to have Governor Carcieri’s support. The Governor has been a model public servant for the State of Rhode Island, and I look forward to building upon the successes of his administration.”

Robitaille continued, “I’m committed to making state government more efficient, transparent and affordable for the people of Rhode Island. The challenges that face our state require both courage and leadership, and my campaign is about moving Rhode Island in bold new directions. I have the determination to take on the special interests, reduce dependency on government, balance the budget, reduce taxes on small business, and make our state an economic competitor again.”

In his letter, Governor Carcieri also reflected on the many achievements of his administration, including fighting increases to broad based taxes, decreasing the size of state government, reforming education, improving infrastructure, and positioning Rhode Island as a leader in renewable energy. Governor Carcieri called out strong union special interests and an overwhelming Democrat majority in the General Assembly as an impediment to progress. “In spite of these powerful forces, we have been able to keep broad based taxes from being raised and have reduced spending. Few states can report such results.”

The Perils of the Value-Added Tax

When liberals advocate a value-added tax (VAT), conservatives should respond: Taxing consumption has merits, so we will consider it — after the 16th Amendment is repealed. A VAT will be rationalized as necessary to restore fiscal equilibrium. But without ending the income tax, a VAT would be just a gargantuan instrument for further subjugating Americans to government.

Adding a VAT without subtracting the income tax would constrict Americans’ freedom much more than the health-care legislation does. Because the 16th Amendment will not be repealed, adoption of a VAT would proclaim the impossibility of serious spending reductions and hence would be the obituary for the Founders’ vision of limited government…
