INFORMATION ON NOMINATION PAPERS:
• You can pick up your nomination papers from the local City or Town Hall where you are registered to vote, anytime after 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday morning (July 7). (Providence candidates only go to the Secretary of State’s office.)
• If you do not pick up the papers yourself, you need a permission letter for someone else to pick them up for you.
• To qualify for the November ballot, you need to get 50 signatures on your papers, if you are running for State Representative, or 100 signatures if you are running for State Senator. You actually need to get many more signatures than that, since some will be disqualified for various reasons.
• Anyone can sign your papers (even a registered Democrat), just as long as he or she is a registered voter in your District. There is no limit to how many papers a person can sign. You can even sign for candidates who are running against each other. Signing these papers does not make you a registered Republican.
• We suggest you make use of a list of registered Republicans, if you have one, since these are people who are likely to sign all of your papers, without giving you a hard time. You should also ask these people if they would like to volunteer in your campaign, or walk their street together with you, or put up one of your signs on their lawn or house.
• Obviously, getting signatures on your own papers is the top priority, but try to get people to sign all the other papers you have. You should exchange papers with other candidates for Legislature and Town Council, whose boundaries overlap your own. They can get signatures for you, and you can get signatures for them. We must work as a team, in order to qualify all our candidates.
• The deadline for getting these papers in to City Hall is Friday July 16 at 4:00 P.M. But we suggest you try to get all your signatures in by Tuesday morning July 13. Waiting until the last minute is a recipe for disaster.
• Each nomination paper must be signed by you on the back (or by the volunteer who gathered the signatures), and must be NOTARIZED. (If the paper is turned in without being notarized, all the signatures on it are disqualified).
• If your District includes more than one Town, you need separate papers for each Town. These papers are turned in to the local Board of Canvassers, which will only count signatures from that Town, and will discard the rest.
• Signatures of newly-registered voters will not count. They must have been registered for 30 days, for their signature to count.
• Use your local Republican City or Town Committee to help you. Hopefully, you have already been in contact with these people. If you do not know who these people are, or how to reach them, respond to this E-Mail, and we will put you in touch with them.
• Let us know early if you need help getting your signatures. Then we can concentrate on sending volunteers into Districts that are a problem. Do not wait until the last minute. Remember, your goal should be to complete this by the beginning of next week.
