Reminders About Picking Up Nomination Papers | Wednesday

INFORMATION ON NOMINATION PAPERS:

• You can pick up your nomination papers from the local City or Town Hall where you are registered to vote, anytime after 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday morning (July 7). (Providence candidates only go to the Secretary of State’s office.)

• If you do not pick up the papers yourself, you need a permission letter for someone else to pick them up for you.

• To qualify for the November ballot, you need to get 50 signatures on your papers, if you are running for State Representative, or 100 signatures if you are running for State Senator. You actually need to get many more signatures than that, since some will be disqualified for various reasons.

• Anyone can sign your papers (even a registered Democrat), just as long as he or she is a registered voter in your District. There is no limit to how many papers a person can sign. You can even sign for candidates who are running against each other. Signing these papers does not make you a registered Republican.

• We suggest you make use of a list of registered Republicans, if you have one, since these are people who are likely to sign all of your papers, without giving you a hard time. You should also ask these people if they would like to volunteer in your campaign, or walk their street together with you, or put up one of your signs on their lawn or house.

• Obviously, getting signatures on your own papers is the top priority, but try to get people to sign all the other papers you have. You should exchange papers with other candidates for Legislature and Town Council, whose boundaries overlap your own. They can get signatures for you, and you can get signatures for them. We must work as a team, in order to qualify all our candidates.

• The deadline for getting these papers in to City Hall is Friday July 16 at 4:00 P.M. But we suggest you try to get all your signatures in by Tuesday morning July 13. Waiting until the last minute is a recipe for disaster.

• Each nomination paper must be signed by you on the back (or by the volunteer who gathered the signatures), and must be NOTARIZED. (If the paper is turned in without being notarized, all the signatures on it are disqualified).

• If your District includes more than one Town, you need separate papers for each Town. These papers are turned in to the local Board of Canvassers, which will only count signatures from that Town, and will discard the rest.

• Signatures of newly-registered voters will not count. They must have been registered for 30 days, for their signature to count.

• Use your local Republican City or Town Committee to help you. Hopefully, you have already been in contact with these people. If you do not know who these people are, or how to reach them, respond to this E-Mail, and we will put you in touch with them.

• Let us know early if you need help getting your signatures. Then we can concentrate on sending volunteers into Districts that are a problem. Do not wait until the last minute. Remember, your goal should be to complete this by the beginning of next week.

RI Republicans Still Need Candidates in 22 Districts!

We’re going to be running a record number of candidates, but we aren’t done yet!

THE DEADLINE TO FILE IS 4:00 P.M. WEDNESDAY

In response to our E-Mail appeal on Sunday, we have picked up GOP candidates in 9 of the 30 Legislative Districts where we did not previously have one. (We also lost a candidate in one District – House 34 in Narragansett). We still need a candidate in 22 House and Senate Districts. (These are listed below).

All candidates for State Legislature must file their Declaration Of Candidacy, at the City or Town Hall in the community where they are registered to vote, by Wednesday (at 4 P.M.). After that, it is too late . If no Republican has filed to run by 4 P.M. on Wednesday, then the Democrat is automatically elected on November 2nd. Even if he gets indicted before election day (something which always seems to be a possibility in this state).

There are a number of Districts where we have not been able to identify any possible GOP candidate; not even a place-holder candidate (we will explain what that means a little later).

In 2010, Republicans are going to win in some very unexpected places, where they would never stand a chance in other years. Voters all over the nation are very angry, and are throwing out incumbent office-holders, just because they are incumbents. Look what happened recently in South Carolina’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary, where a total unknown, who did not campaign or spend any money, won only because his opponent currently held an office. This same sort of thing can happen in Rhode Island. But ONLY if the Republicans have a name on the ballot.

Many people have been assuming that someone else will come forward to run, and they do not need to do anything. Every election year, after the deadline has passed and no Republican filed to run in a District, we have people come up to us and say, “I wish I knew that you did not have a candidate in my District. I would have filed to run, just to keep the incumbent from being re-elected unopposed”. Well, in the Districts listed below, we do NOT have a candidate, and you know about it now. If you live in one of these Districts, will YOU do something about it, and file to run before the Wednesday deadline? Reply to this E-Mail right away if you would consider putting your name on the ballot. (Please, no E-Mails saying “I agree, and I hope you find somebody, but it will not be me”).
And rush down to your City or Town Hall, and file to run. (If it is totally impossible for you to get to Town Hall, contact us immediately, and we will try to help).

Now, the explanation of a place-holder candidate. If a candidate files to run, and gets enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, but then withdraws from the race; the state GOP Chairman has the authority to appoint a replacement, up until September 17. But if nobody files to run by this Wednesday at 4:00 P.M., there is no way under R.I. election law for us to have a candidate on the ballot. (At that point, we are totally out of the race.)

Here are the Districts where we need a candidate in a hurry:

House 1 (Providence – Rep.John McCauley)
House 3 (Providence – Rep. Edith Ajello)
House 7 (Providence – Rep. Joanne Giannini)
House 9 (Providence – Rep. Anastasia Williams)

Ultra-Liberal Democrat State Legislator Re-Elected Unopposed!

“ULTRA-LIBERAL DEMOCRAT STATE LEGISLATOR RE-ELECTED UNOPPOSED”

On Thursday morning of this week, that is the headline you might be reading in your local newspaper… UNLESS somebody comes forward to run in the next few days.

All candidates for State Legislature must file their Declaration Of Candidacy, at the City or Town Hall in the community where they are registered to vote, on Monday to Wednesday (until 4 P.M.). Providence GOP Response to ‘State of the City’ Address

David Talan, Chairman of the Providence Republican Party, responded as follows to Mayor David Cicilline’s State Of The City address tonight:

The Providence Republican Party urges the Mayor to look for ways to hold down city spending, without reducing necessary services. We commend Governor Carcieri for proposing to relax unfunded state mandates on the cities and towns, to allow them to spend much less money on low priority items. We note that a bi-partisan group of Mayors has come out in support of eliminating unfunded state mandates: Democratic Mayors from Cumberland, Johnston & North Providence (Daniel McKee, Joseph Polisena & Charles Lombardi), as well as Republican chief executives from Cranston and Lincoln (Allan Fung and Joseph Almond). Noticeably missing from this list is the Mayor of Providence. We urge Mayor Cicilline to join this effort, and to take a leadership role. We also urge the Mayor to actively lobby the all-Democrat 20-member Providence Legislative delegation to support eliminating unfunded mandates.

In fact, we urge the Mayor to go even further than the Governor has done. The Mayor should lobby the State Legislature for an “Unfunded Mandates Act”, that would relieve the city from having to comply with any mandates that are not funded fully (100 %) by the state government. We would find that we could get by very well without many of these mandated services. As an example of how this could save money, the city 2 years ago got permission from the state Dept. of Education to increase the size of costly special education classes by 20 perecnt from what was mandated. This does not appear to have done any harm to the quality of instruction. (Indeed, we should look at reducing the number of students in special education. In Providence, the percentage of such children is double the national average.) Continue reading ‘Providence GOP Response to ‘State of the City’ Address’
