R.I. Right to Life Strongly Opposes Confirmation of Kagan

Providence, RI — Rhode Island Right to Life (RIRTL) strongly opposes the confirmation of Elena Kagan to the office of Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) has carefully studied various memoranda and other material written by Ms. Kagan during her tenure on the White House staff of President Bill Clinton (1995-1999), as well as other writings and actions by Ms. Kagan as a clerk to Justice Thurgood Marshall, as an academic, and as Solicitor General of the United States. Their analysis can be found at http://www.nrlc.org/Judicial/NRLCletterToSenateOnKaganJune232010.pdf

The White House documents reveal Ms. Kagan to have been a key strategist – perhaps, indeed, the lead strategist within the White House – in the successful effort to prevent enactment of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act during the Clinton Administration. The Kagan-backed strategy did, in fact, prevent enactment of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act during the Clinton Administration. Ms. Kagan played a key role in keeping the brutal partial-birth abortion method legal for an additional decade.

Moreover, soon after the first cloned human mammal (Dolly the sheep) was created in 1996, Ms. Kagan defended the position that the creation of human embryos by cloning should be allowed, as long as the embryos were used as research subjects and not allowed to develop to birth (a policy that in later years came to be known as “clone and kill”).

And in 1998, Ms. Kagan addressed the question of whether physicians in Oregon should be prevented by federal law from using federally controlled drugs in the practice of assisted suicide. Ms. Kagan opined that federal legislation would be a “terrible idea.”

According to RIRTL Executive Director Barth E. Bracy, “Ms. Kagan’s statements and actions indicate that she is radically opposed to even modest attempts to protect innocent human life. And her professional history paints a picture of a social engineer rather than an impartial arbiter of justice.”

Fire Pelosi: 40 Seats Means No More Madam Speaker!

The Republican National Committee has a brand new website called “Fire Nancy Pelosi,” with appropriate graphical representations of San Fran Nan being “fired.” Of course, the ultimate goal is to capture the 40 House seats needed for the Republican Party to regain control of the House.

The RNC’s immediate goal is to raise $402,010.00 in 40 hours. Over the last 2 or so hours, they’ve raised over $138,000.00 $151,000.00. Don’t think there will be a problem meeting the goal. They may however have problems counting all the money coming in! The website is jammed.

Catholic Bishops: Please Vote No on Pro-Abortion Healthcare Bill

In a final, urgent plea to prevent the passage of the current form of the Senate health care bill, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) on Saturday evening sent a letter to Congressmen asking them to vote “no.”

“For decades,” the letter says, “the United States Catholic bishops have supported universal health care. The Catholic Church teaches that health care is a basic human right, essential for human life and dignity.”

“Our community of faith,” the bishops continue, “provides health care to millions, purchases health care for tens of thousands and addresses the failings of our health care system in our parishes, emergency rooms and shelters. This is why we as bishops continue to insist that health care reform which truly protects the life, dignity, consciences and health of all is a moral imperative and an urgent national priority.”

Nevertheless, they add, “we are convinced that the Senate legislation now presented to the House of Representatives on a ‘take it or leave it’ basis sadly fails this test and ought to be opposed.”

The letter is signed by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Chairman of the Committee of Pro-life Activities; Bishop William F. Murphy, Chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development; and Bishop John C. Wester, Chairman of the Committee on Migration.

Gov. Carcieri Urges Reps to Vote Down Flawed Healthcare Bill

Before the expected healthcare vote by the US House of Representatives, Governor Donald L. Carcieri once again urged Representatives James Langevin and Patrick Kennedy to vote against the legislation, citing the adverse consequences the proposal will have on Rhode Island taxpayers, seniors and the economy.

In the letter, the Governor cites the staggering costs of the healthcare legislation, “Over many decades, excessive spending at all levels of government, an aging population, a declining workforce, and the lack of political will to responsibly reform our entitlement programs have combined to create great risk for future generations of Americans. Our children and grandchildren are already facing the daunting prospect of overwhelming levels of debt and high taxation. All of this will be made far worse if the legislation before you becomes law.”

The letter also discusses the impact on the state’s budget. “Rhode Island faces a staggering debt of more than $400 million in Fiscal Year 2011. If Congress enacts a new entitlement program – one that pushes more unfunded mandates on states – it will make that problem significantly worse, perhaps impossible, to overcome. Tens of thousands of people will be added to the Medicaid rolls in Rhode Island, costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.”

The Governor also cited concerns with how the process has occurred, with sweetheart deals and with no involvement with the nation’s governors and the lack of transparency throughout the debate. The U.S. Senate version of the healthcare legislation includes several state-specific special interest deals that were negotiated to garner swing votes, “specifically the so-called “Cornhusker Kickback,” the “Louisiana Purchase,” provisions to exempt Florida’s seniors from some of the Medicare cuts that Rhode Island seniors will face, and funding Connecticut’s new teaching hospital. Some in Congress, perhaps after hearing from the voters, claim that Congress will undo state specific deals, but claim the “Louisiana Purchase” and other sweetheart deals fall outside that umbrella. Suffice to say, the people have good reason to be skeptical.”

“At a recent meeting of the National Governors’ Association, my fellow Governors and I participated in a discussion about state efforts to reform the health care and health insurance systems. From disease management to delivery system reform, state leaders spoke of success stories. Governors asked to participate in the White House summit on the topic of health care just days later, but the invitation never arrived.”

The letter continues, “This bill is not about health care. It’s about ideology and special interests. The President promised transparency, yet no one has the opportunity to read the bill before it is voted on.”

Governor Carcieri also cites concerns that the legislation reverses the Hyde Amendment that prevents taxpayer funds from being used to pay for abortion. “Regardless of attempts to disguise the issue, the simple fact remains that a vote for this legislation is a vote to spend taxpayers’ money to terminate the lives of unborn children. For many, this is shameful, disgraceful and immoral and will violate the consciences of many Rhode Islanders.”

The letter concludes, “I believe that if you allow this legislation to pass, our state and nation will be taken further down the road to fiscal calamity, our seniors will end up with inferior health care, and our healthcare system will continue to be broken. It is my fervent hope that you will vote against this misguided piece of legislation and vote for your state, taxpayers and seniors.”

Senator Says Its Okay To Force Pro-Lifers to Pay for Abortions

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said that it is “morally correct” for pro-life taxpayers to be forced to pay for abortions. Yes, you read that correctly. She said people are asked to pay for many things they don’t agree with, and abortion should be no exception.

Of course, if you believe that the unborn are living human beings, then it stands to reason that you don’t want to pay for the destruction of an innocent human life, right?

Bishop Tobin Discusses Kennedy Communion Controversy

Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin was a guest on the O’Reilly Factor on Tuesday evening, discussing the ongoing scandal regarding Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s recent foray into what some would say is heresy vis-a-vis his position in favor of abortion.

Rep. Kennedy Asked to Refrain From Receiving Communion

p-kMoe Lane of the national conservative blog RedState, has posted regarding the story which has been receiving national attention, regarding Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s having been asked to refrain from receiving Holy Communion (as far back as 2007), due to his anti-Catholic public stance in favor of abortion, including federal funding of it.

Of course, Patches has tried to spin it to portray himself as the victim (what’s new). Just think, all this could have been avoided if Patches had just managed to keep his mouth shut…

Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D, RI) denied Communion.
Posted by Moe Lane

At least, he’s claiming that he’s been forbidden it by Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Providence Diocese, and Bishop Tobin hasn’t denied it – and Tobin has denied that he’s ordered priest under his authority to actually deny Kennedy the Sacrament. Bishop Tobin’s office has also released a letter indicating that the bishop has chastised the Congressman on the subject of abortion since at least 2007; which will call into question the accuracy of Kennedy’s accusation that this is all about the Church’s firm line on abortion funding. It’s probably a factor, and it’s certainly true that Rep. Kennedy has been obdurate in his heresy* for some time, so this is merely the latest salvo.

Still, it’d be nice if we didn’t have to deal with this particular legacy Congressman. There’s actually a serious candidate this go-round: John Loughlin. State legislator, business owner, former military; not to be unkind, but Kennedy really hasn’t worked a day in his [expletive deleted] life, and it shows. Like, for example, in Kennedy’s ability to get himself sufficiently in trouble with the Church on this issue so as to actually be denied the Sacrament.

That takes skill.

Moe Lane

*The fact that the Church has neither the ability nor the particular desire to punish Rep. Kennedy (or other avowedly pro-abortion Catholics) for their shared heresy does not make it any less of one.

Sen. Reid’s Government-Run Health Plan Requires Monthly Abortion Fee

abortion-noJust like the original 2,032-page, government-run health care plan from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) massive, 2,074-page bill would levy a new “abortion premium” fee on Americans in the government-run plan.

Beginning on line 7, p. 118, section 1303 under “Voluntary Choice of Coverage of Abortion Services” the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run health plan. Leader Reid’s plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions (line 13, p. 120).

What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run health plan. It’s right there beginning on line 11, page 122, section 1303, under “Actuarial Value of Optional Service Coverage.” The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account – and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services.

Section 1303(a)(2)(C) describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run health plan and for those who are given an affordability credit to purchase insurance coverage that includes abortion through the Exchange. The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month.

A majority of Americans believe that health care plans should not be mandated to provide elective abortion coverage, and a majority of Americans do not believe government health care plans should include abortion coverage. Currently, federal appropriations bills include language known as the Hyde Amendment that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, while another provision, known as the Smith Amendment, prohibits federal funding of abortion under the federal employees’ health benefits plan.

Leader Reid’s 2,074-page health care monstrosity is an affront to the American people and drastically moves away from current policy. The National Right to Life Committee has called the Reid abortion language “completely unacceptable.” The American people deserve more from their government than being forced to pay for abortion. The pro-life Stupak/Pitts amendment passed the House by a vote of 240 to 194, enjoying the overwhelming support of 176 Republicans and 64 Democrats. The Stupak/Pitts Amendment codifies current law by prohibiting federal funding of elective abortions under any government-run plan or plans available under the Exchange. The Reid plan ignores the will of a bipartisan majority of the House, and indeed the American people, by rejecting this bipartisan amendment.

Health care reform should not be used as an opportunity to use federal funds to pay for elective abortions. Health reform should be an opportunity to protect human life – not end it – and the American people agree. House Republicans have offered a common-sense, responsible solution that would reduce health care costs and expand access while protecting the dignity of all human life. The Republican plan, available at HealthCare.GOP.gov, would codify the Hyde Amendment and prohibit all authorized and appropriated federal funds from being used to pay for abortion. And under the Republican plan, any health plan that includes abortion coverage may not receive federal funds.
