The following is from Conservative Party congressional candidate Doug Hoffman (NY-23). It’s reminiscent of Reagan, circa 1976:
America has changed, and you have helped. Although we did not succeed in winning this election, we have succeeded in making sure political parties and special interests no longer take the people for granted. I believe we have sent a powerful message and laid the groundwork for future conservative campaigns.
I congratulate Bill Owens on a hard won victory. In our tradition of free elections, our country continues. And although Bill Owens has won, I believe America is turning the page to a new dawn.
The ideas of freedom, sound fiscal management and citizen government have sprung back into our consciousness. Our founding fathers would be proud of New York 23. It was here that our principles, those that have been the foundation of our nation, came back to life with a vengeance. And it was here that the people rose up against the political bosses who tried to impose their will. It was here that people reached out to control their own destinies again.
Despite the election results, I am optimistic for our future, because now I know that I am not alone in wanting to repair our great nation. Throughout this campaign I have been inspired by the outpouring of support and the intensity of that support.
I’ve met many different people in this campaign, from many walks of life and many professions; each with a different personal story to share. Yet we are all united in the belief that by participating in democracy, we could inspire change.
I urge that no one feel defeated, for this was only one of many elections. We came close, we put our agenda in front of the nation and the nation took notice. The worse thing we could do now, is not continue forward. Next year there are other elections and other candidates who have drawn inspiration from our efforts.
I would like to thank all of you who placed your faith in me, who worked tirelessly and shared your enthusiasm with those around you. You are all patriots, you have all stood up for your country and I am honored to stand among you.
It wasn’t terribly surprising that the Republican candidate in this race won, but the margin of victory was quite astonishing, considering that President Obama won Virginia just last year.
The gubernatorial results in the states of Virginia and even New Jersey have been cited by some as indicative of the results of mid-term congressional race going back to the mid-1960s. We’ll see. It’s certainly not bad news!
Here is Virginia Governor-elect Bob McDonnell giving his victory speech!

Soon to be FORMER Governor of New Jersey, Jon Corzine, delivered his concession speech tonight after losing his bid for reelection to Republican Chris Christie by a 49%-45% margin. Christie is the first Republican to win a statewide race in New Jersey since 1997.

Legislation for Binding Arbitration and Extending teacher contracts to be heard:
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
House Labor Committee

introduced by Rep. Al Gemma
Call House Labor Committee members and tell them to
VOTE NO TO BINDING ARBITRATION AND PERPETUAL CONTRACTS!
Rhode Island cities and towns are struggling to keep afloat in the current financial meltdown. Not only can this lead to even higher property taxes, but it also takes away the right of your elected school committee to determine this major expense in the school budget. You, the taxpayer will not have a say nor will there be accountability by individual arbitrators who make these fiscal decisions. ACT NOW TO STOP THIS UNION POWER GRAB.
E-mail or call members of the House Labor Committee: Continue reading ‘Contact Your Legislators: Binding Arbitration Hearing on Wednesday’
“After over two decades of lobbying for binding arbitration, our time has come.”
Not if we have anything to do about it. The following e-mail was sent out this afternoon to teachers by NEARI President Larry Purtill regarding the Binding Arbitration bill which will have a hearing next Wednesday. Interesting set of “talking points” attached. Whatever he said, just do the opposite, and you should be okay. We’ve highlighted some of the more interesting points.
Subject: URGENT Message from NEARI president
A message from NEARI President Larry Purtill:
URGENT!!!! The RI House Labor Committee will hear legislation on binding arbitration for teachers Wednesday, October 21, 2 PM at the State House, and the full General Assembly is scheduled to reconvene October 28-29.
After over two decades of lobbying for binding arbitration, our time has come. It is imperative that NEARI members call, email, or write their representatives and senators urging their support for binding arbitration. Our opponents have been contacting members of the legislature – now it is time they hear from us. Binding arbitration will provide a closure mechanism to the collective bargaining process that we have needed for a long time. We cannot allow another East Providence situation to occur in Rhode Island!
You can find contact information for your legislators here:

Below are talking points to help you craft your message.

As of 4:00 PM today, there were 1 Democrat, 2 Independents, and 1 Republican candidate who had declared their candidacies for the House District 62 Special Election. The Republican candidate will be Tom Clupny of Rumford (who incidentally, is a neighbor of the recently resigned Rep. Betsy Dennigan). Because only 1 candidate from each party declared, there will not be a need for a November 24th primary (which is fine by us!). The election will be on December 29th.
The following is from the RI Secretary of State’s office:
Four candidates officially filed to run for Elizabeth Dennigan’s former House seat by today’s 4 p.m. deadline.
Filing for the House District 62 race are Democrat Mary Duffy Messier of Pawtucket, independents Brian Cinq-Mars of Pawtucket and Paul Dinsmore of East Providence, who challenged Dennigan as a Republican in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008; and Republican Thomas Clupny of East Providence.
State law gave the contenders until this afternoon to submit official Declarations of Candidacy. In order to file, the candidates had to be registered voters of the district, which stretches along the banks of the Seekonk River in East Providence and Pawtucket.
The next step begins this Tuesday, when the contenders can begin asking House District 62 voters to sign their nomination papers. The documents– including the signatures of at least 50 local voters – must be submitted to the local boards of canvassers by Oct. 27.
It won’t be known which candidates will qualify for the ballot until our office and the East Providence and Pawtucket boards of canvassers have certified that the contenders submitted the required 50 valid signatures. The certification of signatures generally takes several days.
The special election became necessary when Dennigan resigned Oct. 1. While there will be no primary, there are several other crucial dates leading up to the Dec. 29 election. Nov. 28 is the deadline for registering to vote and mail ballots must be requested by Dec. 8.
Award-winning reporter Jim Hummel, known for his WLNE-TV/ABC6 “You Paid for It” segments, will resume his investigative reporting as part of a newly-created media franchise called The Hummel Report. 3. Exclusive stories in the form of video documentaries that expose government waste and corruption.

“It’s great to be returning to the Rhode Island market as part of such an innovative project,” said Jim Hummel, Chief Executive Officer of the Hummel Report. “The combination of online media and talk radio formats, partnered with an organization that is committed to making government operations transparent, provides an outlet for information that is unequaled in the market today.”
According to WPRO Program Director Paul Giammarco, “Jim Hummel’s association with our award-winning news team and Web site 630WPRO.com creates an outstanding opportunity for all Rhode Islanders to see and learn first-hand about corruption and government mismanagement. Hopefully these reports will inspire Rhode Islanders to become more aware of these corruptions so that we can begin to facilitate systemic change.”
Further distinguishing The Hummel Report from other media sources is its formation as a non-partisan, non-profit entity. Dedicated to exposing waste and corruption for the people of Rhode Island, The Hummel Report is funded by tax-deductible donations.
“We’re excited to partner with WPRO, Jim Hummel and the dedicated Rhode Islanders that sponsor this work,” said William Felkner, Chief Operations Officer of the Hummel Report and President and Founder of the Ocean State Policy Research Institute that provides the transparency database. “I think this partnership is exactly what is needed to end the government waste and corruption that has mired and embarrassed our state for decades.”
