RI Redistricting Committee Meeting | Thursday

David Cicilline’s staff is actively engaged in changing the Congressional District maps to favor him for the 2012 election. According to Channel 12, “Common Cause Rhode Island, and the campaigns of Republicans Doherty and John Loughlin, have seized on the fact the map would move roughly 125,000 people between Cicilline’s and Langevin’s districts when the latest Census required that only about 7,200 be moved.”

No matter which candidate you are supporting for Congressional District 1, the Redistricting Committee appears to be close to recommending “Map E,” that will hurt any Republican challenger to David Cicilline. With this in mind you are urged to attend the next Redistricting Committee meeting which will be held on Thursday night at 6:00pm at the Rhode Island State House in Room 313 to voice your opposition to this proposal. You are also urged to address the Committee and ask that they not recommend a map that will assist David Cicilline with reelection in 2012.

Please come and show your support.

RIGOP: Whitehouse Allegedly Acted On Secret Information

Whitehouse Accused Of Profiting From Secret Congressional Information Shortly Before The ’08 Economic Meltdown

WASHINGTON — Yesterday, it was reported that in 2008 as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke privately warned Congress of a looming economic meltdown, U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse allegedly took this sensitive information and made trades on the stock market with it.

As WPRI-TV Providence Reports:

U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is one of several prominent Washington lawmakers mentioned in a new book that accuses them of potentially making investment trades based on information they received as government officials. The book, “Throw Them All Out,” by former Bush administration official Peter Schweizer, alleges that Whitehouse made a flurry of trades in September 2008 as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke was warning members of Congress about a possible financial collapse after Lehman Bros. filed for bankruptcy. (Book accusing Congress names Whitehouse, WPRI-TV , 11/15/11)

“It’s shocking that Senator Whitehouse would take sensitive information from Chairman Bernanke and then immediately use that information and adjust his financial portfolio,” said Rhode Island GOP Chairman Ken McKay. “Rhode Islanders deserve to know from Sheldon Whitehouse if he regularly leverages his position to gain inside information to increase his net worth or if he only does it when America’s economy is on the verge of a meltdown.”

Smiley Slams Cicilline on Providence Budget Mess

Mark Smiley, President of the Republican State Chairman’s Caucus commented yesterday on the financial nightmare in the city of Providence left behind by previous Mayor David Cicilline. Providence is in a fiscal crisis after Cicilline robbed the cities rainy day fund and borrowed millions to balance the budget last year.

“David Cicilline chose not to make the hard choices and reign in the financial storm that was occurring while he was mayor. He chose to rob Providence of its future and to continue the poor practices already in place. Cicilline attempted to balance the budget utilizing stimulus money that he knew wasn’t coming so that his mismanagement of Providence wouldn’t interfere with his run for Congress. ” said Smiley.

According to Mayor Angel Taveras’ Municipal Finances Review Panel, Providence is dealing with a pension that is underfunded by $2.3 billion and additionally the unfunded liability is even more severe in health-care costs for retirees. The city has just $1 million saved to cover an unfunded liability of $1.5 billion, according to the report.

“Now we know why David Cicilline chose to run for Congress rather than seek another term as Mayor of Providence. It was time to run away from the mess he created and leave the city holding the bag. It is clear that Congressman Cicilline cares more about his own career than the citizens he supposedly represents. He has also left the union rank and file in an extremely bad position given Providence will not be able to deliver what it promised.” said Smiley.

Mark Smiley was elected to President of the Republican State Chairmen’s Caucus last month and is also the Chairman of the Warren Republican Town Committee.

Erik Wallin: Kilmartin is Part of the Problem

Attorney General Candidate Erik Wallin today congratulated Representative Kilmartin for his proposal to “crack down” on public corruption in Rhode Island. “In a press release today, Representative Kilmartin detailed what he would do to enhance a public corruption unit in the Attorney General’s office and create a tip-line — and, since he clearly just took my proposal and put his name on it, I will say that I agree with him.”

For over a year, Wallin has spoken about the need for a Public Corruption Unit/Task Force staffed by three seasoned prosecutors and a forensic auditor as well as a 24-hr tip-line all working together with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Rhode Island State Police. Each of these proposals, including increasing prison and pension penalties, and more, are all embodied in Wallin’s twenty-four page Honest Operation of Public Entities (HOPE) Act (which was released on May 25, 2010 and can be found at www.wallinforag.com).

“As an almost 20 year veteran of the General Assembly – many of those years serving in the leadership – Representative Kilmartin has had ample opportunity to get passed this type of proposal. My HOPE Act codifies this Public Corruption Unit as I believe it is more important than any one Attorney General and should always exist to protect Rhode Islanders. So I ask: where was Representative Kilmartin on this issue for the last 20 years and if public corruption “never sleeps” then what was the 20-year delay?”

Wallin continued, “We don’t need a 20-year political insider as Attorney General – someone who feels that it is appropriate to hold a political press conference inside a courtroom just a few short weeks ago. That type of thinking clearly shows that he’s part of the problem – not the solution.”

Video: Rhode Island Senate Misuse of Power

If you want to know why Rhode Island is in the shape its in, this video will help. It’s from a few months ago, when Senate president Theresa Paiva-Weed, who was determined not to have a particular bill dealing with illegal immigration voted on (despite half the Senate being cosponsors) used parliamentary tactics to kill a bill, and violated a number of procedures in the process. I had previously heard it on radio, but this video is literally appalling.

Almost equally as appalling is Paiva-Weed’s obvious ignorance of proper procedure.

Santelli Rips Democrat For Ignoring Fannie/Freddie Reform

Dems’ Financial “Reform” Leaves Taxpayers on the Hook for Government Mortgage Giants

Democrats still don’t get it, and they refuse to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government mortgage companies that sparked the meltdown by giving high-risk loans to people who couldn’t afford it. Standing up for American taxpayers, CNBC’s on-air editor, Rick Santelli teed off on Rep. Paul Kanjorski’s (D-PA) claim that Democrats’ couldn’t reform Fannie & Freddie in their financial regulation bill because it was “too complicated,” asking:

“It’s too complicated? You think taxpayers that go to work to pay the money you are subsidizing, it will end up a half a trillion, do you think they think complicated is an excuse?”

The exchange couldn’t have come at a worse time for Rep. Kanjorski and Congressional Democrats, because Fannie and Freddie simply won’t go away.

“Fannie Mae’s request on Monday for another $8.4 billion in federal aid comes at a politically inconvenient time for the Obama administration, which is pressing to pass sweeping financial legislation without resolving the company’s future… Democrats want to defer an overhaul of federal housing policy until next year, after the midterm elections. But Republicans have seized on the continuing losses to argue that a plan for the two companies should be a priority of the current legislation.”…

AG Candidate Erik Wallin Renews Call for Appointment of Special Prosecutor

April 25, 2010 – Attorney General Candidate Erik Wallin today renewed his call for the appointment of a special prosecutor or the involvement of the U.S. Attorney into the ongoing investigation of Central Falls Mayor Charles “Chuck” Moreau. Noting the article today in the Providence Journal, Wallin stated, “It is clear that this investigation is ongoing by the Rhode Island State Police for the corruption perpetrated on not only the people of Central Falls but all Rhode Islanders and businesses. What I still do not understand is why after almost three months since my initial call for this or a year since this first came to light in the media, Attorney General Lynch has taken no clear action on this matter.” Wallin noted that his original call for either the appointment of a special prosecutor or the involvement of the U.S. Attorney was on January 27th of this year.

Wallin continued, “While today’s article reveals much more of the details of what was occurring and the specifics about what was being charged to board up a house, the underlying public corruption reported is the same that we knew about over a year ago, and is the same that Attorney General Lynch said on the Lively Experiment with Arlene Violet months ago that he would take no action. And as far as I know, there it has stood.” Wallin added, “Attorney General Lynch owes it to the people of Rhode Island to inform them of what will occur in terms of an investigation. While the Rhode Island State Police have launched and are continuing to investigate, who will prosecute is a question that has not been answered.”

Wallin noted that these actions by Mayor Moreau’s longtime friend of severely over-charging for boarding up foreclosed homes under so-called “emergency powers” of Mayor Moreau was first reported by reporter Bill Rappleye in the beginning of 2009. “Attorney General Lynch was put on notice over a year ago about what was occurring,” Wallin stated, “but Attorney General Lynch took no action and therefore Mayor Moreau’s friend reaped millions at the expense of the people of Central Falls, the people of Rhode Island and both national and local businesses. Clearly, this was an attempt to take advantage of the mortgage crisis thinking that the big banks would just pay these outrageous liens no questions asked.”

Wallin reiterated that as Attorney General, he will have a Public Corruption Task Force staffed with seasoned prosecutors who will have primary responsibility for proactively and aggressively investigating and prosecuting cases of public corruption. Noting that the people of Central Falls and others impacted by the public corruption in Central Falls did not call the Attorney General’s Office because they believed no action would be taken due to Mayor Moreau’s close friendship with Attorney General Lynch, Wallin stated that “under my administration, anyone who betrays the public trust will be investigated by my office, be it a republican, democrat, independent or moderate party member.” Wallin will create a 24-hour Corruption Tip-line to the Department of Attorney General so that the public can report claims to the state’s highest law enforcement office and not just the media. “I also make this pledge to Rhode Islanders, at the first sign of any conflict or apparent conflict, I will immediately appoint a special prosecutor who will independently lead the investigation – that way, Rhode Islanders will always know that their interests and rights are being protected, and not just when the target of the investigation is not a personal friend or political supporter of the Attorney General.”

Key Democrat Actually Tells the Truth About ‘The Rules’

Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL), before his tenure in Congress, had the distinction of being only the sixth federal judge in American history to be impeached from office (for bribery and perjury). Rep. Hastings is now a member of the House Rules Committee.

He had this gem to say earlier today. You’ll be seeing this video again in the Fall:

“All this talk about rules. When the deal goes down, we make ‘em up as we go along.”

Dem Says Scott Brown Swearing-in To Be Stalled to Pass Healthcare ‘Reform’

The Democrats are already setting us up for the possibility of an upset victory by Scott Brown in Massachusetts.

It looks like the fix is in on national health-care reform – and it all may unfold on Beacon Hill…

But if Brown wins, the entire national health-care reform debate may hinge on when he takes over as senator. Brown has vowed to be the crucial 41st vote in the Senate that would block the bill…

…Today, a spokesman for Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin, who is overseeing the election but did not respond to a call seeking comment, said certification of the Jan. 19 election by the Governor’s Council would take a while.

“Because it’s a federal election,” spokesman Brian McNiff said. “We’d have to wait 10 days for absentee and military ballots to come in.”…

…In contrast, Rep. Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell) was sworn in at the U.S. House of Representatives on Oct. 18, 2007, just two days after winning a special election to replace Martin Meehan. In that case, Tsongas made it to Capitol Hill in time to override a presidential veto of the expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Yesterday, Brown, who has been closing the gap with Coakley in polls and fund raising, blasted the political double standard…
