Government Run Healthcare Just Beyond Your Fingertips

This is a pretty good web ad from the National Republican Congressional Committee, pointing out the complete lack of transparency by the House Democrats in crafting health care “reform” legislation behind closed doors, in violation of the president’s own repeated promises.

A Government takeover of Healthcare is knocking on America’s door. Unfortunately for Americans, Nancy Pelosi and her Liberals allies aren’t opening up their door to let anyone in on the process.

As good as it is, the appearance of what certainly looks to be an iPhone in the ad probably will mean that it won’t be up too long after the ‘cease and desist’ order is received from Apple. However, the point will have certainly been made by then.

Not-So-Secret Santa: Senator Reids Payoffs, Kickbacks, and Sweetheart Deals

All year long, the more the American people learn about Washington Democrats’ costly government takeover of health care, the more they oppose it. Indeed a new Quinnipiac survey shows continued disapproval for the Democrats’ government-run approach. Only 36 percent support Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) bill, while a majority (53 percent) oppose. Opposition among Independents, at 58 percent, is even higher. And that anger is growing as Americans find out more about Sen. Reid’s unseemly payoffs, kickbacks, and sweetheart deals that were included to buy the votes of Democratic senators. Here’s a sampling of the reaction to these payoffs, kickbacks, and sweetheart deals in today’s papers:

“If it could be proved that the chief executive officer of a major American corporation — a pharmaceutical firm, say, or an insurance outfit — had delivered hundreds of millions of dollars to the governors of two of the 50 states in exchange for two U.S. senators from those states changing their votes and defeating the proposed federal takeover of America’s medical industry, it’s not too hard to imagine the results: the perpetrator led out of his office in handcuffs by the FBI, front-page indictments and trials, commentators reviling the worst case of public corruption to be seen at such a high level in generations. Yet when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., promised to deliver those sums to Nebraska and Louisiana (and not to the other 48, no credible claim of ‘the general welfare’ here) in recent weeks to buy off Sens. Mary Landrieu and Ben Nelson in order to line up the 59th and 60th votes needed to pass the biggest new federal boondoggle in half a century — the Nebraska payoff coming early Saturday morning — he didn’t even try to keep it a secret.” – “Health Care Deal Looks A Lot Like a Bribe,” Las Vegas Review-Journal editorial, December 23, 2009

“Blanche Lincoln and Evan Bayh must feel like saps. The Arkansas and Indiana Democrats spent months caterwauling about this or that provision in the Senate health-care bill, then at 1 a.m. Monday they voted to speed its passage without getting so much as a lousy T-shirt. In Harry Reid’s Senate, this qualifies as dereliction of duty, as the Majority Leader said himself on Monday in defense of his frantic deal-making to get 60 votes.” – “The Price of ‘History,’” Wall Street Journal editorial, December 23, 2009

“In the wee hours of Monday morning, Senate Democrats passed their version of health reform in a strictly partisan 60-40 procedural vote. It was accomplished with political payoffs that should die in conference committee but probably won’t. The tawdry use of earmarks to bury the doubts of recalcitrant moderate Democrats was a cynical display of ends-justifies-the-means horse-trading that President Barack Obama campaigned against as a senator and candidate.” – “Harry Reid Sells His Political Soul,” Fort Worth Star-Telegram editorial, December 23, 2009

“Among the most distasteful elements were essentially the payoffs used to secure votes from senators in Nebraska, Florida, and Louisiana. The shakedowns, er, side deals provide extra funding for Medicaid and Medicare just in these states, and limits on abortion coverage demanded by Sen. Ben Nelson (D., Neb.)” – “A Health Deal is at Hand,” Philadelphia Inquirer editorial, December 23, 2009

“New Yorkers better be ready to dig deeper into their pockets to pay off all the bribes Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., offered senators of other states to win their support for the $871 billion health reform bill.” – “Reid Payoffs,” Watertown Daily Times editorial, December 23, 2009

“America’s overused credit card, issued by the Bank of China, may have to be used one more time to pay for Reid’s deals. The majority leader traded to help ensure the votes of Sens. Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Chris Dodd, Bernie Sanders and others representing 11 states by giving them special perks for staying on the health care bus that’s about to drive us all over the financial cliff. They may argue they weren’t bribed, but they certainly were rewarded. The price was enormous.” – “Harry Reid Playing Santa With Your Money,” CNN column, December 23, 2009

“With the approval rating of Congress sinking in the polls and public opinion of their health care plan going down along with it, Democrats may have done themselves one favor too many this week when they riddled the bill with special deals for individual lawmakers. As Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., struggled to pull together his 60 Democratic-controlled votes needed to pass the bill, certain holdout lawmakers were able to carve out extra money, benefits or exemptions that senators from other states didn’t get.” – “Big Payoffs to Senators on Health Bill Stokes Public Anger,” Washington Examiner, December 23, 2009

“Sometimes there is a fine ethical line between legislative maneuvering and bribery. At other times, that line is crossed by a speeding, honking tractor-trailer, with outlines of shapely women on mud flaps bouncing as it rumbles past. Such was the case in the final hours of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s successful attempt to get cloture on health-care reform. Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, the last Democratic holdout, was offered and accepted a permanent exemption from his state’s share of Medicaid expansion, amounting to $100 million over 10 years.” – “For Sale: One Senator (D-Neb.) No Principles, Low Price,” Washington Post column, December 23, 2009

Republicans are standing up for American taxpayers by exposing these payoffs, kickbacks, and sweetheart deals and offering better solutions to lower health care costs. The Republican health care plan would lower premiums by up to 10 percent, cut the deficit, and consistently reduce federal spending on health care over the next two decades. That’s the type of common-sense solutions the American people want and deserve out of health care reform.

Workers Blow Whistle on SEIU Election Fraud

seiu-thugsThis video illustrates why it is no surprise that the SEIU beat up a Tea Party vendor, and that it has adopted the role of brownshirts for the Obama revolution, albeit the SEIU thugs wear purple instead. SEIU doesn’t represent workers, it preys upon them.

This year the “card check” bill, otherwise known as the “Employee Free Choice Act” — an Orwellian title if there ever was one — has been in the news because of its attempt to effectively eliminate secret ballot elections in union organizing drives, and so the protections built-in to a secret ballot process.

As that attempt at a totalitarian-like union election process has been intense, “compromises” are being floated, such as mail-in ballots.

This video demonstrates why that will be a farce, and such a “compromise” will still enable the unions to realize the goal of EFCA, that is, to intimidate workers into allowing the union into their workplaces, and thus into their wallets.

Erik Wallin Calls for Recusal of Attorney General in Landfill Case

erik-wallinAttorney Erik Wallin, Expected Republican Candidate for Attorney General, Decries Continued Inaction Against Corruption and Calls for Recusal of Attorney General in Landfill Case

October 28, 2009 – Erik Wallin, a Rhode Island attorney, former State Prosecutor and expected Republican Candidate for Attorney General, today decried the continued inaction against those responsible for corruption at the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC), the state’s landfill, for wasting $75 million in taxpayer money, along with an employee allegedly falsifying his timesheet and mileage reimbursement forms. “Clearly, getting to the bottom of what happened at the landfill and what is happening there now, is on the minds of most Rhode Islanders, including the Governor, the General Treasurer and myself. However, my concern is continued inaction by our Attorney General.”

Attorney Wallin noted that the audit that has yielded no prosecutions and the recently discovered no show employee continues to be of serious concern to Rhode Islanders. “Aggressively combating corruption is something an Attorney General must have as a top priority. Unfortunately, when the Governor ordered the audit, and even before that, there was little attention from the Attorney General, and now, as the General Treasurer seeks ways to recoup some of the lost tens of millions of dollars, our Attorney General credits the creativity but seemingly dismisses the idea citing legal challenges and saying that it smacks of politics,” Attorney Wallin stated in reference to Friday’s article in the Providence Journal. “Inaction seems to be a recurring theme,” Attorney Wallin added.

With new details about the Attorney General’s lobbying efforts on behalf of the landfill, Attorney Wallin expressed his outrage. “Without question, at the very least, this required immediate disclosure by the Attorney General. Transparency for an Attorney General is paramount as the state’s top law enforcement officer, and Rhode Island deserved to know from him of his past dealings with the landfill, not from the ProJo. How could a decision by the Attorney General, a past lobbyist for the landfill, not to prosecute anyone, not raise an eyebrow – that’s why transparency is so important.” Attorney Wallin added, “It is time for the appointment of a special prosecutor to follow through on the investigation of the landfill and the recent revelation of the landfill employee with an alleged ‘no-show’ job.”

Attorney Wallin has been consistently seeking answers to decisions made with regard to prosecutions of those involved at the landfill stemming from the audit. “Rhode Islanders are entitled to answers to the Attorney General’s statement that no criminal prosecution will occur – such as, what specific crimes were considered to be prosecuted; why was it the Governor that first shed light on such illegal activity; how will you prevent this in the future,” Attorney Wallin stated. And concerning the recent no-show job, Attorney Wallin noted that he has been calling for an immediate investigation. “If I were the Attorney General, my public corruption task force would have been at the landfill the day the ProJo contacted the office for comment, if not earlier. I certainly would not have waited until the Sunday article was published or waited until public pressure increased for action. I’m glad he is finally outraged by something at the landfill, but based on his past involvement, he should recuse himself from all matters at the landfill.”

Attorney Wallin has traveled the state with the message that being committed to fighting corruption requires leadership from the Attorney General. Attorney Wallin has proposed a Public Corruption Task Force, staffed with seasoned prosecutors, investigators and a forensic auditor to immediately initiate an investigation if corruption is suspected to prevent the statute of limitations from being the shield for those who betray the public trust to hide behind. In addition, Attorney Wallin has proposed an Attorney General 24-hr corruption hotline so that Rhode Islanders can provide information and/or tips.

How Long Can Democrats Stand By Charlie Rangel?

DemoRats…Hopefully, as long as possible. We need a good “poster child” for the 2010 election cycle.

“The House ethics committee expanded a sprawling investigation into Rangel Thursday, digging into allegations stemming from an August restatement of his personal finances, in which he under reported hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets. The ethics committee action – which was unanimous — came a day after House Democrats turned back a Republican attempt to force Rangel from his Ways and Means chairmanship while the investigation, now in its second year, is completed. . . . But even if Pelosi relented and asked Rangel to relinquish his gavel, there would be a political firestorm, as she would be moving to oust a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus from a chairmanship he waited nearly four decades to get.”…

RIGOP Files [Another] Ethics Complaint Against Attoney General Patrick Lynch

patrick_lynchThe state GOP has filed an ethics complaint against Atty. Gen. Patrick C. Lynch that accuses him of violating the state’s $75 gift cap by accepting a roundtrip plane ticket worth $428.50 from the National Cable and Telecommunications Association for a trip to New Orleans last year.

The complaint, filed late last week by state Republican party chairman Giovanni D. Cicione, marks the second time the state GOP has asked a state regulatory agency to call Democrat Lynch to task for his frequent out-of-state trips, and the way he has accounted for them on his public disclosure filings. Lynch has announced his intention to run for governor…

The complaint that Cicione filed with the state Ethics Commission zeroes in on a different issue: A state regulation prohibiting public officials from accepting any gift valued at more than “$25 per instance and up to $75 per year from each interested person.”…

Governor Carcieri Orders State Defunding of ACORN-RI

gdcWith the recent revelations of alleged fraudulent and potentially illegal activity by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) being reported across the country, Governor Carcieri today ordered all department directors and state agencies to immediately identify and cease any payments being made directly to ACORN-RI or indirectly to any of its affiliates.

“It is unconscionable for a single dime of taxpayer money be spent to support an organization that is engaged in this type of activity,” said Governor Carcieri. “I am ordering a review of each state department, agency, and quasi-public agency to determine if ACORN is benefiting from taxpayer dollars.”

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to deny all federal funding for ACORN nationally in response to numerous incidents where the organization was allegedly involved in fraudulent activities at multiple ACORN offices nationwide. The U.S. Senate voted to deny all federal funding to ACORN earlier in the week.

The Governor is also asking the State Board of Elections to review the legal status of the ACORN-RI political action committee. “If ACORN-RI has used either Federal or State taxpayer dollars to support its political agenda, this activity must stop, and the Board of Elections must take appropriate legal actions against the organization.”

U.S. House Adopts Issa Motion to Defund ACORN

flamingacornEditor’s Note: Both Rhode Island Representatives, James Langevin and Patrick Kennedy voted in favor of cutting off ACORN funding. Previously, Jack Reed did as well in the US Senate. That leaves Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse as the only member of the Rhode Island congressional delegation to have voted in favor of funding ACORN (1 of only 7 Senators).

WASHINGTON. D.C. – House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Darrell Issa (R-CA) released the following statement regarding the 345-75-2 adoption of the Republican Motion to Recommit for H.R. 3221, which denies ALL Federal funding for ACORN:

“Today’s House vote to deny ACORN Federal funding is an important step that follows action by the Census Bureau and the U.S. Senate. The battle, however, to deny ACORN federal funding is not over until the President signs the bill into law. ACORN gave significant support to Democrats and Americans must remain vigilant to avoid backtracking or efforts to water down prohibitions denying Federal funds to this corrupt organization.”
