‘Pessimistic Conservativism’ at P.C. | Wednesday

The Providence College Republicans are bringing National Review magazine’s “resident pessimist,” John Derbyshire, to campus tonight at 7:30 pm (112 Slavin Center). This event is free and open to the public.

The German historian Oswald Spengler once famously stated that “Optimism is for cowards”.

National Review columnist John Derbyshire will be coming in to speak to the Providence College Republicans about why he believes that optimism should be reserved for the political left.

Mr. Derbyshire will be tackling many issues, all the while explaining why the right should embrace “conservative pessimism” to counter the falsehoods of our modern age.

Republican Club of Brown University Fundraiser | April 14

My name is Terrence George, and I am president of the Republican Club of Brown University. I am writing to inform you of the great accomplishments our group has made this year and to ask for your support.

The Republican Club has been hard at work for over 120 years to ensure that Republican values are represented on Brown’s campus and in the community at large. This year has been no different, with Republican Club members working tirelessly to support conservative candidates, and ensure that the message of mainstream America is not lost in campus political debates.

This year, members have represented the Republican Club in writings in the Brown Daily Herald, ensured the survival of the Brown Spectator: Journal of Conservative and Libertarian Thought, revived the Ivy League Republican Caucus, volunteered for conservative candidates, been appointed to the Providence Republican Party City Committee and designed a full-credit class entitled “Modern Conservatism in America” taught by Federalist Society founder, Visiting Professor Steven Calabresi, along with other experts in conservative thought.

This last accomplishment required a herculean effort, of which we are most proud. Our course has been featured in the Providence Journal, the Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times, to name a few. I have also spoken about the course on WHJJ’s Helen Glover Show, NPR’s On Point with Tom Ashbrook and at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. Though these mediums I have been able to inform the nation about the great work we are doing at Brown.Despite these successes, our continued growth in this bluest of blue states will not be possible without the support of our friends and alumni.

If you find us worthy of your support, we ask that you either donate directly or come to enjoy beer, wine and heavy hors d’œuvre at our fundraiser in the historic Brown Faculty Club on April 14th from 6 to 8pm. An invitation to this event is attached, and though donations will be accepted at the door, we ask that you do RSVP in advance.

I truly hope you can attend our event, and I appreciate your timely response. Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns or the names of others you believe should be invited to our event.

Respectfully,

Terrence Louis George

Dinesh D’Souza to Speak at Brown University | Monday

The BROWN COLLEGE REPUBLICANS are pleased to invite all ladies, gentlemen, students, faculty, and anyone else with the slightest interest to a lecture by Mr. Dinesh D’Souza entitled “Is God the Problem?”.

A strong Conservative debater (a more comprehensive biography is pasted below this description; I implore all of you to examine it), Mr. D’Souza strives to elucidate the misconceptions about the effects of religion and religious behavior on our society as a whole. As Dinesh said to me himself, the topic of his speech, “Is God the Problem?”, will address the following:

“Many people, notably atheists, allege that belief in God is not merely unscientific and irrational; it is also dangerous. They argue that religion is the cause of many of the evils in the world, from the Crusades and the Inquisition to 9/11 and the current unrest in the Middle East. In this talk I will challenge this critique of God and religion and show that God, far from being the problem, is actually the main part of the solution. This is not just a case for the utility of religion, however; it is also an argument for the truth of religious belief.”

Does this sound interesting to you? If so, please join the College Republicans in MACMILLAN HALL 117, at 8PM on MONDAY APRIL 26th! View the additional material (provided below) if you want to get a feel for what the speech will be like.

RI College Republicans Endorse Robitaille for Governor

Today the Rhode Island College Republicans endorse John Robitaille as our next Governor of Rhode Island. With the looming state budget deficit, future pension liability and expanding social welfare obligations, the state of Rhode Island is facing a bleak future. In this critical time we need a Governor who understands the politics of Smith Hill, but who is not a professional lifetime politician. Likewise, the state of Rhode Island desperately needs a bold common-sense conservative who is willing to cut taxes, streamline regulations and help the private sector create jobs.

As college students, we can see first hand the profound lack of attractive careers in the state since most major corporations have fled to more business friendly climates. In order to encourage students to come to Rhode Island’s great colleges and universities and then remain in the state, we must radically change the big government tax and spend culture in our state. John Robitaille has the courage, skills and experience needed to make it happen and therefore we endorse.

Obama Zombies: New Book by Ex-RI’er Jason Mattera

Former Chairman of the College Republican Federation of  Rhode Island, Jason Mattera, has just released his first book (available via this link), “Obama Zombies: How the Liberal Machine Brainwashed My Generation.”

Jason has been very busy, working as a spokesman for the Young Americas Foundation, as well as most recently as a contributor to the blog, Hot Air. He’s kind of become known for ambushing hated public officials, and making them answer inconvenient questions. Yesterday, he confronted House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer by first “thanking him for all his work on health-care reform.” Then, after he made him feel comfortable, he went on to ambush him, asking him if it was a good idea to sic the IRS on Americans for not buying the right kind of health insurance…

RI College Republicans Endorse Erik Wallin for AG

The Rhode Island College Republicans are pleased to announce our full support and endorsement of Erik Wallin for the position of Rhode Island Attorney General.

Gang activity and crime is out of control in the City of Providence, home to five of the state’s ten colleges and universities. This situation has made violent crime a visible reality for students attending these institutions. Erik’s no nonsense commitment to crack down on crime will make certain Rhode Island is once again a safe place to come and receive a college education. Even more importantly this commitment will ensure Rhode Island holds greater opportunities for young people, susceptible to being caught up in the tailspin life of gangs and organized crime, to find success in crime free neighborhoods.

Having witnessed Erik’s drive and initiative on the campaign trail we can be confident he will carry these traits into office of Attorney General and into the backyards of criminals everywhere. We endorse.

Check out his website and contact us to find out how to become involved in the campaign
