Eric Golub: Live from the 2011 NFRA Convention

This commentary by conservative blogger and comedian Eric Golub includes a great overview of the recent NFRA Convention in Des Moines, Iowa. As you may recall, Eric was the featured performer at the RIRA’s “Conservative Comedy Night” fundraiser back in May. We appreciated the positive reference to the Rhode island Republican Assembly (RIRA):

…The NFRA calls itself the “Republican wing of the Republican Party.” When the GOP decides to cave in to the left, the NFRA is there to remind everyone the benefit of standing on conservative principles.

The head of the NFRA is Rod Martin, and his organization has chapters throughout the United States from Rhode Island to Hawaii. In Rhode Island, the Republican Assembly often has larger gatherings at meetings than the GOP itself.

The convention was a successful showcase of rising stars in the GOP…

Happy Tenth Anniversary, RIRA!

Today is the actual Tenth Anniversary of the “Republican Wing of the Republican Party” in Rhode Island, the RHODE ISLAND REPUBLICAN ASSEMBLY!

The RIRA was officially chartered as a chapter of the the National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA) on October 27th, 2001.

Due to the proximity of the actual anniversary date to the NFRA Presidential Preference Convention in Des Moines, Iowa (where a number of RIRA leaders are at present), the “official” RIRA anniversary celebration will be held during the third week of November. There will be much more to come about that shortly. Thank you to all of our members and friends for your continued support.

NFRA Convention Update

Three Days to Convention!

We are on our way to Des Moines!

So much is happening on the ground in Iowa, we don’t have time to tell you everything, but here are some highlights:

We’ve confirmed Santorum, Paul, Cain, Gingrich, and Anita Perry – and we’re in talks with the rest.

National media is coming: NBC, C-SPAN, CNN, Human Events, WorldNetDaily – and those are just the ones we know about.

Iowans are coming: If you have friends and family in Iowa (and we know you do) tell them about the Straw Poll, and make sure they come to support their candidate – or figure out who their candidate is if they aren’t sure yet. This is why we chose Iowa for convention! $20 gets them in the door, to the candidates, and lunch to boot. It’s a great deal! Straw Poll tickets are available on the convention website.

It isn’t too late to register for convention, but it is getting close. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime event!

We’re going to need your help. We are rolling out the carpet to Iowans and the candidates. We’ll be calling on you to help us put NFRA’s best foot forward. If you can help, or can serve in particular ways, please reply to this email so we can connect you with the Hospitality Committee. Everything is in place but you!

We are so thankful to our sponsors:

NFRA: Blackwell, Angle Appointed to NFRA Board

We told you we had big news… And when we promise, we deliver!

We are thrilled to announce our two newest NFRA Vice Presidents: Ambassador Ken Blackwell and former U.S. Senate nominee Sharron Angle!

These heroes of the conservative cause are longtime supporters and members of the Republican Assembly movement. But today, they take their places in the formal leadership of the NFRA, America’s only conservative group dedicated entirely to reforming the Republican Party and taking it back for its overwhelming conservative majority.

That is why Ken Blackwell has joined the NFRA leadership as Executive Vice President.

Ken Blackwell served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Mayor of Cincinnati and Ohio Secretary of State before running for Ohio Governor in 2006. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Republican National Committee’s Platform Committee and Senior Fellow for Family Empowerment at the Family Research Council. He serves on the boards of the Club for Growth and the National Taxpayers Union and is a member of the National Rifle Association’s public affairs committee. Amb. Blackwell is a noted columnist, commentator, and leader of the effort to reform the Republican Party.

Tea Party hero Sharron Angle is joining our team as Western Region Vice President.

Sharron Angle, a lifelong educator, is most recognized for her 2010 campaign to oust Senator Harry Reid. She began her career in public office on the Nye County School Board, and fought to protect the Constitution as a member of the Nevada State Assembly, for which she received the Claremont Institute Ronald Reagan Freedom Medallion. Sharron is dedicated in her outreach to the Tea Parties, and recently completed a tour with the Tea Party Express “Reclaiming America Presidential Tour”. She is a longtime member of the Republican Assembly movement, and we were among her first endorsers for U.S. Senate.

Ken and Sharron have worked side by side with us for years. Now they have stepped forward to help lead us to victory in 2012 and beyond. A new day — and a new conservative Republican Party — begins here.

For Freedom,

Rod D. Martin

Rhode Island Republican Assembly Biennial Endorsement Convention | June 12

The Biennial Endorsement Convention of the Rhode Island Republican Assembly will be held on Saturday, June 12th, 2010. The event details are still being finalized. However, we expect that it will be held from about 1:00 PM to 5:00PM.

This event will include a big fundraiser to benefit our state Political Action Committee, presentations from numerous Republican officials and candidates, and then votes on endorsements by the membership of RIRA for all Federal and State elective offices in Rhode Island. Please note that since we are holding this Convention on a Saturday afternoon, it means that there will not be a regular monthly RIRA meeting on the Thursday which precedes it (June 10).

Please check the RIRA website at http://ri-ra.org or visit the RIRA Facebook group for further announcements. It’s going to be a very memorable event for conservatives in Rhode Island!

NFRA President Calls On RNC to Fire Steele

DESTIN, FLORIDA — Today, National Federation of Republican Assemblies President Rod D. Martin called on the Republican National Committee to immediately fire Republican National Chairman Michael Steele for comments he made Tuesday night to a student group in which he stated that African Americans “don’t have a reason” to vote for Republicans.

The story concerning Steele’s remarks appeared in The Politico, and is available online at http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0410/36171.html

“I can think of a hundred reasons why African Americans should vote Republican, so why can’t our African American national chairman?” Martin asked. “Most African Americans are pro-life: so are we. Most African Americans believe in traditional values: so do we. Most African Americans are in favor of school choice for their children: so are we.

“In fact,” Martin continued, “there’s hardly any issue on which Democrats serve the interests of African Americans. We stand for cutting their taxes, improving their health care, expanding opportunities for their small businesses and robustly defending their — our — nation from foreign threats. The left’s appeal has always been ‘you are a minority, you are a victim, we will defend you from white America.’ It’s racist, it deliberately reopens half-century-old wounds which were inflicted by Democrats in the first place, and it has to stop.”

The National Federation of Republican Assemblies, styled “the Republican Wing of the Republican Party”, is a 75-year old grassroots organization which seeks to elect real conservatives to lead the Republican Party. Said Martin, “Steele is no conservative, and if he believes what he said, not only does he have to go, but he was dishonest in taking the position he holds, and any RNC member who acts to continue his chairmanship must be challenged for re-election as well.

“We must repudiate the politics of victimization, race and bribes to groups. Michael Steele sees blacks and whites. We see and seek to serve Americans: all Americans. That is the chief difference between the two parties, and if Michael Steele can’t see and articulate a vision that simple and that inclusive, he is unfit to lead our party or anything else. He needs to go, now.”

Rhode Island Republican Assembly Meeting | April 8

Rhode Island’s largest conservative organization (and sponsor of this blog), the RHODE ISLAND REPUBLICAN ASSEMBLY, will hold its next general meeting on Thursday, April 8th, 2010.

The meeting will be held in the lower-level of the Tri-City Elk’s Lodge No. 14, at 1915 West Shore Road, in Warwick. For those wishing to eat before the RIRA meeting, a pasta buffet dinner is available between 6:00pm and 7:00pm. The cost for dinner is $8.00 per person. It is “all you can eat” and generally includes pasta, meatballs, soup, salad, and dessert. There is also a Cash Bar available. The RIRA business meeting starts promptly at 7:00PM, and generally lasts until around 9:00PM.

The guest speaker for the meeting will be Erik Wallin, Republican candidate for Rhode Island Attorney General. In addition, several Republican candidates for General Assembly are expected to speak with us.

The RIRA is the Rhode Island affiliate of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies, a thoughtful national organization of GOP conservatives working to grow and strengthen the Republican Party in the tradition of President Ronald Reagan. This is a dinner meeting, and if you want to eat, you pay for your own meal. Any like-minded conservative Republican is welcome to attend.

For more information, please contact RIRA President Ray McKay at president [at] ri-ra [dot] org or NFRA Northeast Region Vice President Will Ricci at NEVP [at] ri-ra [dot] org or visit the RIRA web site at http://www.ri-ra.org.
