Rep. Mike Pence Delivers Weekly Republican Address

Chairman Pence: “After 18 months of runaway spending, bailouts and takeovers, Washington Democrats are poised to allow the largest tax increase in American history to take effect next year.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the Weekly Republican Address, Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence (R-IN) talks about Washington Democrats’ refusal to listen to the American people and take action to prevent the largest tax increase in history from taking effect. Republicans are listening to the American people through America Speaking Out and offering better solutions to get people working again and make government more accountable to the people it serves. Now in his fifth term in Congress, Chairman Pence represents Indiana’s 6th Congressional District. Text of the address follows; audio of the address is available here and video of the address will be available here once the embargo is lifted. You can download the Weekly Republican Address here.

Zaccaria Responds to Langevin Announcement

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Today Mark Zaccaria, Republican candidate for Congress, responded to the expected news that his opponent, Congressman Jim Langevin, would seek re-election.

“I welcome Mr. Langevin into the 2010 race, and I hope that this time, unlike in 2008, he will be open to multiple public debates in which the issues can be discussed in front of the voters,” said Zaccaria. In 2008, Langevin ignored numerous requests from Zaccaria to engage in public debates, eventually agreeing to a single radio debate. “I’m sure he will spend the next three months ducking any debates with Ms. Dennigan and spend the Fall refusing to debate me. If he is so proud of his record, why is he afraid to defend it in a public debate?”

Zaccaria went on to disagree with some of the comments made by Langevin in the recent article in the Providence Journal.

“Mr. Langevin is right that people are tired of partisan politics,” Zaccaria said. “But I find it laughable that he would describe himself as ‘non-partisan’. Langevin has been the most reliable vote for Speaker Pelosi, voting the party line about 98 percent of the time. If he doesn’t see that as being partisan, then he is delusional. Rhode Island cannot afford to allow Mr. Langevin and Speaker Pelosi to continue to put people out of work and drive businesses out of this country while catering to their special interests.”

Mark Zaccaria is a resident of North Kingstown, RI, where he runs a small business. He and his wife, Ruth, have been married for 35 years. They have three grown children who are all residents of the state. Learn more about Mark’s candidacy for congress at the web site: http://www.zaccariaforuscongress.com

28-Year House Democrat Incumbent Axed in W.V. Primary

Rep. Mollohan’s Loss Signals Potential Trouble For Dems

Tuesday night, Democratic primary voters in West Virginia showed 28-year Congressional veteran Rep. Alan Mollohan the door.

Democratic state Sen. Mike Oliverio toppled Mollohan. Oliverio’s victory made Mollohan the first House casualty in what has already been a turbulent midterm election year…

…Oliverio went after Mollohan’s alleged ethical lapses. And pro-life Democrats criticized Mollohan for voting in favor of the health care reform bill…

… Mollohan’s loss could spell bad news for Democrats.

In 1994, one of the reasons Republicans won the House is because they not only vanquished weak members and lawmakers from marginal districts, but wiped out big fish, too. That year, the GOP defeated House Speaker Tom Foley (D-WA), Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Rostenkowski (D-IL), Judiciary Committee Chairman Jack Brooks (D-TX) and others.

Historically, the midterm election is usually a disaster for the party of the president in power. Going into this election year, Democrats knew they could potentially lose 25 to 30 seats. That’s consistent with midterm election history. But for the GOP to win the House, they have to knock off senior members. Like Mollohan…

From April 19th through Election Day, this will be the location of the daily operations for our winning campaign to replace Mr. Langevin and bring real independent leadership to Washington.

The address is 7448 Post Road in North Kingstown. It’s located just south of the Camp Ave. intersection and you can get there easily from the new Route 403 by heading to Quonset then taking the exit for Wickford & Route 1 South.

I hope that you will be able to join me at both of these events, and I look forward to your continued support of my campaign. Alone, I cannot succeed, but together, we cannot fail – this will be our year!

Catholic Bishops: Please Vote No on Pro-Abortion Healthcare Bill

In a final, urgent plea to prevent the passage of the current form of the Senate health care bill, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) on Saturday evening sent a letter to Congressmen asking them to vote “no.”

“For decades,” the letter says, “the United States Catholic bishops have supported universal health care. The Catholic Church teaches that health care is a basic human right, essential for human life and dignity.”

“Our community of faith,” the bishops continue, “provides health care to millions, purchases health care for tens of thousands and addresses the failings of our health care system in our parishes, emergency rooms and shelters. This is why we as bishops continue to insist that health care reform which truly protects the life, dignity, consciences and health of all is a moral imperative and an urgent national priority.”

Nevertheless, they add, “we are convinced that the Senate legislation now presented to the House of Representatives on a ‘take it or leave it’ basis sadly fails this test and ought to be opposed.”

The letter is signed by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Chairman of the Committee of Pro-life Activities; Bishop William F. Murphy, Chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development; and Bishop John C. Wester, Chairman of the Committee on Migration.

Key Democrat Actually Tells the Truth About ‘The Rules’

Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL), before his tenure in Congress, had the distinction of being only the sixth federal judge in American history to be impeached from office (for bribery and perjury). Rep. Hastings is now a member of the House Rules Committee.

He had this gem to say earlier today. You’ll be seeing this video again in the Fall:

“All this talk about rules. When the deal goes down, we make ‘em up as we go along.”
