House Democrats Appear Set to Pass Senate Bill Without Voting on It

This is grossly unconstitutional, but what would you expect? Perhaps we should start referring to them as the “Kamikaze Congress.”

Republicans now expect Democrats to pass health care through the House with a trick only Capitol Hill could dream up: approving the Senate bill without voting on it.

It’s called the “Slaughter Solution” (prepare for a weekend of endless TV gabbing about it).

And after debating House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer on the chamber floor, Minority Whip Eric Cantor emerged convinced that Democrats are going to use the tactic, and that they won’t allow Republicans, and the public, to see the text of any legislation for 72 hours before a vote.

“I can infer that we’re going to see a rule that will deem the Senate bill as having passed, and at the same time not even have 72 hours to even look at what they are passing,” Cantor, a Virginia Republican, said in an interview outside his office at the Capitol.

“The outrage to me on the part of the public is going to be focused on the fact that there is not even an up or down vote, a clean up or down vote,” Cantor said.

Here’s the reason Democrats are using such a complicated procedure: many in the House completely do not trust the Senate to pass fixes to the bill passed by the Senate in December. But according to the rules of reconciliation, the House must go first in passing the Senate bill and passing a reconciliation fix. George Will: ‘The House Is All That Matters’

“What we know for sure Matt is if they had the votes today they would vote tomorrow morning. So they don’t have them yet.”

As he often does, George Will made an excellent point on “This Week,” regarding the status of the health care vote in Congress. Will said that the vote in the House of Representatives is “all that matters.” If the House passes the Senate Bill as is, it can then go to President Obama’s desk and become law. Will said that Democrats do not currently have the votes to pass it.

President Obama Disrespects Supreme Court at SOTU

During his State of the Union Address tonight, President Obama committed a significant breach of protocol by openly criticizing the members of the United States Supreme Court in his presence for their recent decision agreeing that free speech rights apply to American corporations (as well as unions, for our liberal friends).

After Obama insulted the court members, Associate Justice Samuel Alito can be seen shaking his head and mouthing what appeared to be the words “not true,” as the Democrats around the Supreme Court members stood and applauded around them.

Boehner Backs Move to Open Health Care Talks to Media

Washington (CNN) – The top Republican in the House of Representatives is backing a move by C-SPAN to allow television coverage of House-Senate health care reform negotiations.

In a December 30 letter to Democratic and Republican congressional leadership, C-SPAN Chairman Brian Lamb requested that they “open all important negotiations, including any conference committee meetings, to electronic media coverage.”

C-SPAN is a non-profit cable entity largely devoted to coverage of Congress.

House Minority Leader John Boehner supports C-SPAN’s move, saying “hard-working families won’t stand for having the future of their health care decided behind closed doors.”

“Secret deliberations are a breeding ground for more of the kickbacks, shady deals and special-interest provisions that have become business as usual in Washington. Too much is at stake to have a final bill built on payoffs and pork-barrel spending,” added Boehner, in a letter to Lamb that was released Tuesday.

Democrats say it’s impossible to predict what kind of media coverage might be possible, given that it is unclear at best if there will be any formal negotiations between the House and Senate to merge the two chambers’ health care reform bills into one piece of legislation.

“We will continue to keep the American people informed,” said Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a member of the House Democratic leadership.

“There has never been a more open process for any legislation,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. But “we will do what is necessary to pass the bill.”

Pelosi and Van Hollen spoke to reporters Tuesday, after huddling with other House Democratic leaders.

Top Democrats are prepared to short-circuit the traditional legislative process and exclude their GOP counterparts during final congressional health care deliberations, senior Democratic sources have told CNN. Democrats are trying to prevent the Republicans from using Senate rules to slow the push for final passage of a comprehensive reform bill, the sources added.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs refused to weigh in on Lamb’s request, saying he had not read the letter.

‘Patients First’ Calls Nancy Pelosi’s Transparency Bluff

In response to C-SPAN’s request that cameras be allowed to film the House-Senate conference on health care, Speaker Pelosi responded that “there has never been a more open process.” Yet, she won’t let cameras in — in spite of President Obama’s promise that the negotiations would indeed be aired on C-SPAN.

Therefore, Patients First, A Project of Americans for Prosperity, has launched a website: http://www.letthecamerasin.com. There is also a new Facebook page up. On the website, there will be a petition [which can be signed] to demand that the health care legislative process be even more “open” by allowing Americans to actually see what is happening.

House Republicans Oppose Importation of Terrorists to America

Earlier this year, the House Republicans created a video, “Never Again,” to speak against President Obama’s decision to close Guantanamo Bay prison. Since the announcement was made that some Guantanamo Bay prisoners will be moved to Illinois, they felt the video worth highlighting again. GOP.gov has an entire section on this topic, including information on the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act. Check out the our special section for articles and relevant news.

Resolution Introduced Allowing Congressional ‘Medal of Honor’ Recipients to Fly the American Flag

cmohToday, Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA) and Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) introduced a resolution, H. Res. 952, allowing Congressional Medal of Honor recipients to properly display the United States flag on their property at all times.

Recent media reports, including from the Mark Levin Show, uncovered a 90 year old Medal of Honor recipient, Col. Van T. Barfoot, who was ordered by his homeowner association last week to remove a flagpole from his yard, where he raises the American flag faithfully each morning.

“I was appalled to learn that one of our decorated Congressional Medal of Honor veterans was being prevented from proudly displaying the Flag of the United States of America in an honorable way,” said Rep. McKeon. “This reminds me of that famous quote by George Washington: ‘The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their country.’ Our service men and women – especially those living with honors and distinction- should be allowed to fly the flag that represents the very freedoms they fought so hard to protect.”

“It’s a sad day when a veteran of three wars is told he cannot fly the American flag on a poll outside of his home,” said Republican Whip Cantor. “Col. Barfoot made countless sacrifices, wore our country’s uniform with honor, and has earned the right to proudly display the American flag. I thank Col. Barfoot for his service and support his patriotism and efforts, as well as those here in the House, to allow him to fly his flag.”
